Usually when I say that something was random, I can think of what brought it to mind. In this case, I really have no idea. She wasn't even a character I was that interested in when I read The Silmarillion, although I liked her dismissive attitude toward dudes. It kind of made me laugh.I did try drawing her once, quite a while ago. [link] I think I've made some progress. XD Although the color choices in that one were probably better... but I have my reasons for how I did it this time, so whateeeevah.
Anyway, just wanted to do this quickly, so I'm sorry if it's all ew or anything.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this rather old picture! I remember wanting to make her clothes functional, rather than particularly pretty, though I still wanted a feminine element with the corset. I just got the sense that she was the sort who cared more about being able to do what she wanted rather than looking super pretty when she did it.

lol yeah people always look at me funny when I tell them it XD Even my mom hates it but I love it and am glad my dad gave me it.HE was gonna make my first name Luthien at first but my mom wouldn't have it XD.Even though it is a really pretty name I don't think it'd go too well with me

I really really like this Aredhel. Very in charachter. And the bow is a great addition, since she was a hunter. And I love her hair. I know her story is minor, depressing, and very dark, but maybe because of that it's my second favourite chapter of the 'Sil'. It is, to say, different from the rest of the book, and maybe that's what impressed me the most.

Thank you! I was just randomly inspired to draw her... she's such an interesting character, so I guess that happens. I agree that her story was everything you already said... but it is interesting nonetheless, and plays a pivotal role in the course of later events. I cannot say exactly why I enjoyed that chapter as much as I did; perhaps you are onto something with it being different from the rest of the book.

I think that what I like the most is the ambiguity of the tale. It has been ten years since I read the Sil and I am not still very sure what to make of the story and the charachters. Is the story which has made me think about it the most, imagining all the thigs and details that it doesn't tell you.

I really should make something for my artistic progress... but I have difficulties deciding what pictures I want to use and whatnot, and then I get lazy and forget about it.
Yes, her skin shooould be lighter, and her eyes brighter. And they were, until I put the parchment texture in the background. Once I saw how much darker everything looked with that, though, I was very sleepy and wanted to go to bed. So I did not mess with it. It was supposed to be a quick picture, anyway.

Oh, ok, that parchment stuff is necessary. You could try to "mess" with it a little to regain her bright eyes though.^^

Ah, but I purposely wanted to do something different from the feeling of the movies. Somebody mentioned something in one of the Tolkien pictures I did a while ago, that it reminded them of Legolas in the movie, and I did not want to repeat that. I wanted to give it my own spin. If it helps any (which it probably doesn't XD), I sort of imagined her hair being more intricate in the back... maybe in one of those fishbone braids, or a reverse french braid... but since the view is not of the back, that is not something you can see. I didn't think of it as just being yanked and pinned up in a haphazard manner as it might look.

Don't put work on yourself
Your pictures are definitely different from the movies. Mission accomplished. ^^b I also did not mean that I am in love with the style of the movies, I just took this detail as an example. And I did not think that her knot was just a simple knot. ^^ She is an Elf-woman after all, and her hair does not look simple in you picture. It just feels... odd to me when Elves bind up their hair too much. Because they love it, no?^^ There must be a special reason to tie it up like that... and Legolas always shot with his hair open. But I also like your interpretation.

Haha, yey. I win. *laughs* Although I was personally pretty happy with the majority of the movie style... it wasn't what I had imagined, but it seemed more fitting than what had been originally in my head.
Aaaah, so it's just the fact that all of her hair is up like that, then? Well that is understandable. I felt a little strange about it, too, but it seemed to be the way that the picture wanted to be drawn, you know? Sometimes the hand moves in ways different from the inspiration (which can be very frustrating).

When I imagine, my characters usually have almost pale skin, very light, thin lips, and they all look the same. It is funny... You can really not compare it to what a movie is.
Maybe the picture wanted to be "whole". Because: if you drew her looong hair, swaying in the wind, it would sway out of perspective, and that's worse than a knot.

Hehehe, they all look the same? That makes me think of so many different skits from shows and movies... like where the same person keeps popping up but just changes one thing, like adding a hat or something. XD
Mmm yes, that is true. Another thing I had worried about was having too much of the picture taken up with dark things -- I knew I needed to make certain parts (like her cloak and the girdle/armor thing) dark, and if her hair was down then it would overwhelm the picture. Especially since she's suppooooosed to be the White Lady and all....

Yes, you are right... oĆ Now that you mention it... I thought about those grey clothes when I saw the picture at first, but I said nothing, because it looks good. The shining pure white is gone anyway because of your parchment overlay.
