Description Probably the most tantalizing of unmade films for fans of Godzilla, is this particular movie. Most likely because this is the one proposed project that got as far as getting us a production statue of the would-be villain Bagan (to which his appearance here is based off of). That, and the fact that Bagan was to have been involved with the early drafts of "The Return of Godzilla" as well as the main opponent to a Mothra feature (before the whole "Rebirth of Mothra" series was conceived).

I see many clamoring for Bagan to still make it to film, and I still havent reached an understanding of exactly why. But nevertheless it was fun to draw him facing off with G, in what may have become a feature before "vs. Destoroyah" came to be.

From what we know, the battleship Gotengo would have been the JSDF's advanced battle weapon to handle the kaiju combat. I guess Japan's budget was low after the high-tech Mechagodzilla and it's lesser cousin M.O.E.G.E.R.A.

One things for sure, I wager that Bagan would be a handful for Godzilla and the Gotengo, and that's what I wanted to depict!

Indeed! Godzilla has faced MANY utterly difficult opponents, that have put a serious smack down on him. But, G somehow finally toppled those foes! I see Bagan doing the same, giving G some serious life threatening injuries, but G once again somehow being triumphant! I've always said that Destroyah (an AMAZING kaiju villain), was Bagan's replacement!

I think so too. It would be almost redundant to have Bagan in the same series. Another lumbering, barely-agile, beam-shooting kaiju would join the ranks of Biolllante, Mechagodzilla II. Space Godzilla and Destroyah.

True! But I think Bagan is possibly without any beams,Β  but relies on excessive brute strength! I may be wrong on that, BUT, I do know that Godzilla's atomic breath has no effect on Bagan, much like Hedorah (The Smog Monster!)

You know, sometimes I feel that less overpowered version of Bagan should replace SpaceGodzilla. It would be better if Bagan is another planet/universe equivalent to Godzilla that has no relation with him. Bagan is a physical fighter, and somehow immune to Godzilla's Thermonuclear breath, forcing Godzilla to fight him claws to claws. In this movie, we will see the true animalistic Godzilla driven by rage, which lead to his eventual demise in Godzilla vs Destroyah

I'd like for Gareth to finally realize Bagan in a G film, if it comes to it! Bagan is basically a "fairytale" kaiju, since he's never been in any movies, only picutres and video games to an extent!

Umm, actually I more like it if the one who bring Bagan to the screen is Toho. I'm afraid Hollywood will screw up such legendary unmade monster.

Lol,trust me, I DO feel you! We really lucked out with the Legendary Godzilla! When he displayed the atomic breath in the 2014 film, viewers across America breathed a sigh a relief, lol! But, yeah, Toho needs to get back in the limelight and make some modern day G films, and YES bring Bagan to realization finally!

This is really awesome, but I have a note: the 1995 designs for the Gotengo were directly ancestral to those of the Liberty, having three drills. As per whether or not Gotengo was ever actually planned for the Bagan iteration of Godzilla 7, there's not much to go on. Its role included deploying the "Neo Oxygen Destroyer" which seems more like it wouldn't have been around until the death plots of vs. Godzilla and vs. Barbaroi, but then again for all the info that's out there about Godzilla vs. Bagan they could have planned on killing him there as well.

There's not much info in English about what exactly was going on in all the drafts for Godzilla 7, so it seems like a big jumbled mess. Honestly, whether or not Bagan was ever seriously considered for Godzilla 7 is kind of an unknown as well, since interviews with Kawakita show him being mostly clueless about it and all the other elements and characters between vs. Godzilla, vs. Barbaroi, and vs. Destroyah are connected to each other, with Bagan just sort of not being part of the obvious evolution.

Honestly, the idea that Bagan was going to be in Godzilla 7 at some point might just be a rumor. The Gotengo, as Super X-3, however, was defo in there somewhere before it got nerfed into just another Super X that just happens to have a freeze ray.

I guess this would more or less be a "fan service piece" then. I wasn't too familiar about the details regarding this concept, other than the brief description of the Gotengo being involved and the "official" artwork from the Godzilla Studio Tour ROM of the title opponent.

As I have mentioned prior to this, I don't really understand the fascination with Bagan. I personally think he's another addition to the bigger-then-Godzilla bulky biped kaiju that follow suit with MechaG '94, Space G, and Destoroyah. I'm sure he'd been equipped with a variety of beam weapons and would have done some ridiculous anti-gravity feats as well.Β  Other than being a clearer designed kaiju of numerous un-made ones, he leaves little for me personally. But you can't deny his fan base....

I was going to save commenting on this tomorrow while I am at work, but I am afraid that my fingers would get tired on the phone before I could properly give my feedback lol. Yeah, if you wonder why it takes me a day or so later to comment on your stuff, it's because I am waiting to write about it on my phone at work. Gives me something to do on my breaks and lunch lol!

Anyway, what can be said about this kaiju that has not been said over a thousand times before. It's a giant biped lizard for Godzilla to fight. Something...that really only creatures like SpaceGodzilla and Titanosaurs can claim. Honestly, it is sort of strange that Godzilla doesn't fight more monsters like that. That being said, this is probably my favorite incarnation of Bagan. Though I think I prefer the black and red from the video game. Just makes him look that much more demonic.

I remember fighting him in that Super Godzilla game. I didn't know you could charge up your punch and do this flying punch....so I would always just walk up to him and try to retreat and use an attack before his happy butt attacked me. Sadly...he beat me a few times. I remember I was fighting him as normal Godzilla...and I finally was able to pull off a fire blast attack. I was jumping for joy because that was so hard to do as the normal Godzilla. Bagan would often just ram the hell out of you. I almost cried when I saw him throw-up that force-field with his hands. I was so depressed.

But anyway, enough with sad childhood memories of a game long since past. lets go to the artwork! This looks great. I am glad you kept the blur down a little bit on this. I think it would have really taken away from the colors and crispness of the whole illustration. Bagan looks just great though. I love the energy crackling off of him. I know that is hard to get to look right. And I am glad that you gave him a "new" weapon...as opposed to just shooting an energy beam like everyone else. He seems more like the explosive plasma ball like Gamera monster to me. Godzilla looks just as good. Though I think it would have been a nice touch to have some blue energy playing off on his dorsal spines as well. Might really give that "super nova about to explode" like feel.

The Gotengo looks looks good, albit a little rough. It's hard to do machines by hand I know! That ship is tricky as crap. Even when I did it, it came out looking like some dumb chibi thing. So hard earthbaragon.deviantart.com/ar…

But yours looks good. I like the fact that it is attacking too and not just floating around and watching the action. To be honest, if they did do this film...they might have very well have done the exact same ship as the original Gotengo. I mean they did use the ship on the Sazer-X movie after all. That is another film series that Toho did. Though Sazer-X was freaking bad. Gransazer and Justirisers was way better.

Sooooooooo..............yep. I like it. Long story short

Fourgreen In reply to earthbaragon [2014-06-20 14:20:33 +0000 UTC]

Wow! LOL! Super Godzilla was a source of torment for you I guess! I've actually never played Super Godzilla. Seems like it was very much a strategy game. I had the 2 Godzilla games for the NES, and then when Atari put our DAMM/STE/Godzilla Unleashed, I went ape shit and bought all of those. The concept of Super Godzilla is something I haven't explored as he resembles Space Godzilla quite a bit. Not sure if I'll ever do a piece with him, but if I do, I'll make sure he's doing his Spiral Fire Blast Attack.

Yeah, I was really close to not using the motion blur, but realized that instead of Godzilla rushing Bagan, so he can miss his shot at the Gotengo, he'd just look like he wanted to hug and cuddle with him. LOL.
Speaking of Gotengo, mechanical objects: NOT my strong suit. I LOVE Mecha. I like giant Robots. But I am incapable of drawing a steady line, and I rarely have a ruler handy to assist me. For me? Gotengo is somewhat of a decent accomplishment (sad, I know), based on the fact that it's somewhat recognized. I did my own take on it, instead of taking the Final Wars one, as I feel that one belongs in that world.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

earthbaragon In reply to Fourgreen [2014-06-20 16:32:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I am certainly not a fan of the revamped ship from final wars. But my tastes in mechanical figures is very steampunk-ish. I love the colors and bolts in the designs. Might be why I like stuff like King Joe, Crazygon, and the original Moguera so much.

But you did a really nice job. Its a perfect blind of techniques that you have been experimenting with. Really the only thing I had was the energy playing off Godzillas spines. And that is not bad, Its just a personal preference.

Oddly enough, according to Heisei Godzilla Perfection from Hobby Japan, Bagan IS canon within the Heisei Godzilla movies. Just off screen.

No lie. Excellent picture btw. Bagan has been done to death on DA, but your pic is really standout! It looks like the end of the world there and I like it.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

cultistofvertigo In reply to seigired [2014-10-25 01:40:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, how exactly is that supposed to work? Because Super Godzilla definitely doesn't fit into the heisei timeline at all, and in Godzilla vs. Mothra no one's heard of Mothra yet so it can't be Mothra vs. Bagan happening off-screen. Does this mean that Bagan simply exists, but never... wakes up? Or something? What makes the logistics especially confusing is that "canon" is a thing for the bible and star wars, not Godzilla. "Canon" implies things that count or that actually happened, but Godzilla continuity occurs in multiple timelines, there is no actual "canon" at all, period. Various stories might not synch up with other ones but they will with something else. So even if Bagan wasn't part of the heisei timeline, he'd still be a part of the Super Godzilla one... so... so what's actually being said here?

seigired In reply to cultistofvertigo [2014-10-25 06:05:41 +0000 UTC]

Here's my guess, Godzilla fought and killed Bagan off screen somewhere between Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla and Godzilla vs Destoroyah. And maybe he's just no where near as powerful as his cult lets him believe. (I feel his power is somewhere between Spacegodzilla's and Destoroyah's)

I agree, there's hundreds of Bagan art manips, drawings, models, pixel sprites...you name it. This guy isn't going anywhere...
