Description Snowflakes! w00t! ...and posted before Christmas... I'm impressed with myself, lol.

second half of this deviation is available at [link]

14 different snowflakes made (repeats were made but only to give to people who don't know each other ...I hope ). I would've liked to make more, but material limitations prohibited me from exceeding 5" diameter snowflakes, not to mention time and the fact that I was doing this during finals week instead of studying.
all patterns came from a book given to me by a friend last Christmas, 99 Snowflakes, published by Leisure Arts
each snowflake was individually hand-crocheted (by yours truely), starched, and pinned until dry [link]
After all that and after these pix were taken, they were turned into ornaments by adding string

Merry Christmas!

wow! these are awesome! I am going to have to look into getting that book; I have recently learned how to actually read a crochet pattern, and I want to make some of these to hang on my yule tree. Awesome work! What did you starch them with? *I have never starched anything before*

Thanks

I liked the book: it had a good amount of variation between the flakes and a huge range of sizes (from 2" to at least 10", maybe more if I remember correctly). It also has starching instructions at the end. It does not, however, include charts; it's all just written out instructions.

I starched them with starch I picked up at a grocery store (probably in the laundry aisle). The brand that was available to me was Linit but I'm sure any undiluted starch would work. I never starched anything before these snowflakes and I'm very happy with the way they came out.

Good luck! And let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help

Thanks for all the info; I currently have my hands full with chainmail, but I hope to give snowflakes a try as soon as I can.

These are fantastic! I spotted them on dA knitters I think, and was amazed. I'm glad you explained the book, but still would like a little tutorial by you on how it's done.............then we can all feel accomplished ha ha. Maybe during the next time you should be studying?

flutterbyfae In reply to Mattsma [2008-01-19 20:38:07 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I already started working on a tutorial for them. Great timing! (just be warned it's taking a long time)

Maybe during the next time you should be studying?
Haha, that's what it would have been, but I've since graduated. Procrastination is such a great time to get things done

"boogie: YAY!! I've always wanted to know how to do this. These are the moments I'm saddened that my maternal grandmother is gone, but so very glad I have everyone on dA to teach me!

Have you ever heard of a book called "Angels, a knitter's dozen"?
It's the same principle only with angels instead of snowflakes.
I need to go find that book with the snowflakes now. Snowflakes for next year!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to MAReiach [2008-01-05 22:50:25 +0000 UTC]

I didn't until now
I just searched for it on Amazon and bookmarked it. I've limited my craft budget to nothing new until I finish the yarn I currently have, but after that, anything's fair game

And it's knit? I'll admit I'm a bit intimidated by that: I'm just starting to work on making things that aren't rectangular. But the one on the cover looks so awesome I can't resist.

Thank you so much for sharing

wow these are beautiful i've just been teaching myself to crochet so this is good inspiration! were they difficult to make? was it a very small hook you used?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to D0R14N [2007-07-27 20:52:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

They weren't too difficult after I got used to working with the smaller materials. (Then after you get used to the smaller stuff, the "normal sized" stuff feels so big and bulky.)

was it a very small hook you used?
You say you've been teaching yourself (which is amazing!) so I have no idea what you know already. I'm sorry if you already know some of this:

There are two kinds of crochet hooks: yarn hooks and steel or thread hooks. Yarn hooks range from (smallest to largest) B (2.25mm) to Q (15.00mm). Thread hooks go the opposite direction--the larger the number, the smaller the hook. They range from (largest to smallest) 00 (3.50mm) to 14 (.75mm). For these snowflakes, I used a size 5 thread hook (1.90mm) and mostly matched the snowflake sizes the book said I should get (they recommended a slightly smaller hook). So, yes, it was a small hook, but there are still much smaller!

thanks heaps for the info! i didn't know any of that before, though i'd seen some tiny metal hooks in shops and wondered what they could be for, guessed when i saw the snowflakes

Hmm.. I don't know if I can legally post the patterns, but I can tell you that they're from 99 Snowflakes, published by Leisure Arts [link]

There are also a ton of other related books out there listed on Amazon that I'm sure you could find in any major bookstore (or maybe a really good library?).

I'd love to see what you come up with (whether you use a book or try your own designs... I would imagine they're kind of similar to your bun covers).

Wowee! They're beautiful!

I wish I could crotchet... Is it hard to learn? Harder than knitting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to darthdwad03 [2007-01-19 04:39:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, sweetie!

General consensus of friends I've taught is that crochet is easier. So long as you can master single or double crochet, the other basic stitches aren't hard at all and from my experience, harder stitches aren't that much more complicated. For knitting, there's only two stitches--knit and purl--but you have to keep track of more than one stitch at a time (making it more difficult to rip out if you mess up). The more complicated knitting stuff.... is more complicated, lol. There are cables, lace work, shaping (most clothes are knit, not crochet), etc.

I recommend both, but that's my biased opinion

You're very welcome! (:

I've only started to learn to knit, I just about managed the knit stitch, although it takes bleeding hours or rather days for me to knit something, and being a perfectionist I always undo the knitting and start all over again. Hmm... maybe I'll ask for a crotchet set for my birthday...

Any opinion is welcome!

flutterbyfae In reply to darthdwad03 [2007-01-20 20:48:13 +0000 UTC]

My grandma insisted I learn how to knit first, then crochet. I guess once you master the harder one the easier follows very quickly. But, of course, it's different for everyone.

Haha.. I'm a perfectionist, too. There are ways to fix stitches several rows down without actually ripping out the whole thing to that point. www.knittinghelp.com -> basic techniques -> shows some ways (though I'll admit I just found that site a few days ago and haven't had time to go through most of it, much less try anything out).

Do you have anything completed yet? I didn't notice any in your gallery but I'd love to see if you do.

I've half-knitted a 'scarf' that's basically a small white oblong thing and haven't had time to do any more, I've just had two weeks of mock exams... I ought to learn to add fringes too...

I don't know what a mock exam is, but two weeks of anything with the word "exam" in it doesn't sound fun =/

They're basically pretend real exams that we have to sit under exam conditions. They're not very important but a good guideline of how you're doing. My real GCSEs are in May and June... *shudders*
