Description Dragon pumpkin carved for my boyfriend. Instead of punching out all the pieces he liked the outline effect.

OMG this is soo cool I love how the light inside hits the leftover inards giving the body of the dragon the look of shaded colors rather than holes that light is shining through. Wow, you have given me a whole new artistic medium to browse through Well done.

Leaving the parts in helps stabilize the pumpkin while carving the rest of it; it was just a happy accident that it looked good so I left them in

But be careful browsing the pumpkin carving category -- it can easily suck up hours of time (and, of course, keep in mind that if it's not your season for pumpkins, you can always try carving watermelons )

Yeah, took an entire afternoon and then some, but with practice I'm sure it wouldn't take nearly as long.

spanishgirl290 [2009-01-11 00:06:48 +0000 UTC]

That looks really great!! How do you stop the whole design from caving in?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to spanishgirl290 [2009-01-12 17:03:45 +0000 UTC]

While carving, I kept one hand inside the pumpkin to support the wall while I sawed through. After carving... well, I didn't make any major mistakes while carving that would cause it all to fall apart and leave big gaping holes, plus not punching out the pieces also supports the design. I've also heard that toothpicks work well if you have a very fragile design, but haven't tried them myself.

Thanks!
"Transient" is putting it mildly--between hungry squirrels and general decay both barely lasted a week! Ah well, c'est la vie.

Goodbye-kitty975 [2008-11-05 00:44:57 +0000 UTC]

i like the outline effect as well. this looks way too intricate for me to handle. VERY impressive though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to Goodbye-kitty975 [2008-11-16 04:40:26 +0000 UTC]

The outline keeps it a bit darker (and neater--I don't want to think of what would have happened to all those intricate parts if I had to punch them out!). Thanks

i've never carved a pumpkin before in my life but this makes me want to try!

although i highly doubt i'll get anywhere close to this....

flutterbyfae In reply to CountessDeSangre [2008-11-09 14:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Hello hello, and thanks for all the comments & faves (wow!).

I would definitely recommend trying it (and now that it's after Halloween, pumpkins will probably be even cheaper ). It's fun, challenging, yields pumpkin seeds, and you'll ultimately create a pretty glowy thing of your own

As for difficulty, I cheated and used a free pattern from the internet ([link] which has everything BUT Halloween patterns, and there's many, many more just a quick Google search away), so all I had to do was follow the pattern--quite less intimidating

CountessDeSangre In reply to flutterbyfae [2008-11-10 04:14:26 +0000 UTC]

oh wow thanks, im gonna try it next year.... with some practicing behind closed doors until then...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

flutterbyfae In reply to CountessDeSangre [2008-11-16 04:46:22 +0000 UTC]

you're going to end up with pumpkins covering every inch of your yard/porch/whatever!
If you're planning on starting in the summer, though, I hear watermelons are also fun to carve...
