Description Alles Gute zum Geburtstag

A while ago, I was told by Grace to draw a sketch that inspires from a Muse's song Ultra. And I did. And it totally sucked I never showed it to her.. and I think she forgot However, her birthday drew nearer, and since she and Lar made me such a sweet birthday gift on my birthday some months ago, I had to get to work on her gift ASAP.. then I remembered the failed drawing, played the song again and got a fresh new image.

Scene Explanation:
This is a familiar concept of mine - a young woman dancer, creator and destroyer of space entities. She's a Flamenco dancer in this scenerio. Her fan spreads to create a black hole, which destroys the universes she creates. When she collapses the fan, she collapses the blackhole, and the black hole is destroyed. At the same time, she continues to make more stars and galaxies.. and she keeps going. She is constantly creating and destroying to the rhythm of her dancing
She is the Universe, Trapped Inside A Tear.

Grace, this is your lesson. Never give me a song and expect any of my interpretations to make sense. I never look at lyrics sheets until I'm curious. And I was. And I think I got it completely wrong. I think this will be the main disappointment for you with this.

This was a drawing/completed a couple days before Just For Now (I was scared I was going to run out of time..) and I am not as pleased anymore as I was originally. It still doesn't look right but I detest having to draw people from behind.. I hope you like it anyway Grace!

Finally I have some time to comment on this great piece of artwork. >__>

The back looks plain perfect. I am surprised how well you are at realism after these few tries!
The falts of the skirt look very nice, too. ^^^

But the shading of her left arm looks a bit too hard, and you still have to practice realistic hair - but that's all I see what could be improved here.

The pose came out great and the composition is very ballanced.

In a whole the picture appears a bit cheesy, but it's a wonderful buirthday present. Great job, and keep going!

I mainly practice on paper first, like with drawings on pencil, sketching. I also look at a lot of realism tutorials and fine examples of colouring. I never stop trying.
Yeah, I like them too! I used to fail so bad at falts - I'll have to thank you once again, I wouldn't have done them without your tutorial from all those months ago!

Yeah, I should still practice hair, it's so stringy.

there are now some mistakes I can see in it now, but it's better than anything I've done before so it's still good.

Yeah, it is cheesy One reason I don't like it, but thanks anyway!

I am very happy, this crappy thing was of help to you. ^^^

Maybe you find some tutorials for hair only?

You know that Grace wants to print this and put it on a wall, right?

Artist's are their harshest critics.. I think I said this twice today in my comments
There are, I have them faved! I think I'm too heavily concerned with skin at the moment. I'd like to try one thing at a time for now, since I haven't had as much time to draw as I used to.

Oh, hehe (:

this is beautiful... everything I like rolled into one. Seriously! I'm a hardcore Muse fan, who loves spanish dancing and I have a fascination for "celestial" themes...
I cannot stress enough how much I love this ( seldom leave comments on here!).

You are too amazing.

It's weird how we got the same idea, to draw a Flamenco dancer for Grace.

I'm not going to say everything that looks great. That'd take too long.
I'll just say that I'm surprised at how this turned out, and really proud.

THIS is amazing, omg.. I'm in love with everything about this!! The anatomy looks amazing along with the details, and the story behind this is so deep and brilliant I'm a complete sucker when it comes to the universe and what lies beyond it, and what you have created here has instantly captured me : D

...Sucker I am too I've had this deep interest in Astronomy since I was 12, when I moved out into the country. A quote I found recently on a deviation comes to mind now: “If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live a lot differently.". And I couldn't agree more.
Thank you very much (: I think there is some anatomy I have to fix like maybe the muscle structure in the back and the arm closest to us, but I can say that I am most pleased with the hands (: I still feel quite dreamy about this one though. I hope I don't end up overusing the space/stars concept! XD

...

This is beautiful work. Very original, even if the source material was from a song that you hardly understood. You took the impression that it made on you and ran with it. Very inspired.

I honestly do not have many qualms with this project. I wonder about the background, whether it needed to be violet or go for more of an "empty void of space" feel and go black. It would probably give more emphasis on the space within the tear, make it more layered than it is at the moment. Right now, it feels a tad shallow. When human perception is forced into a smaller area, there is a greater perception of distance. If you want to really give the impression of an expansive universe within such a small object as a tear, I would try that out.

You do need to work on anatomy, but you have done pretty well here. Drawing someone from behind has been troublesome to me, and to a lot of people, because we are so used to drawing the front of a person. Experiencing them from behind is challenging, but it adds to the mysteriousness of the creater you have made (the creator created by a creator...how redundant ). From the looks of it, where you need to improve on the back is the shoulder blades and the spine. A little more work on the musculature of the arms and the wrists, and you will be golden. Otherwise, it is a very beautiful work.

I remember having a conversation with you about trying to bring attention to our work without the need of fandom, such as Irkens, but with our own skill. This, I believe, may be a defining work for you, for the short time that I have seen your work.

I realise it's a trait with me not to take much to the lyrics - I feel more inspired by the melody or the beat than to work out the meanings. See, I'm doing a unit of poetry at school (again!) and it's evident from my class contributions that I seldom ever get the intended idea of the poet.. Of course, there are no rights or wrongs, but I can gather that I'm not the best when I see how others can get it right the first time ^^' Pictures are for me, but prose is a no! My challenge next time is to stick with a song's intentions, I think

Ah, yeah, you mean the background inside the tear or the background around the tear? I can explain for the inside of the tear, that the violet tinge comes from the "Colour overlay", sort of Layer setting in Photoshop. It was to help bring a tint to the tear's surface because I consider it a very glassy and clear entity - bring it a little more 3D. If you're saying about the background on the outside of the tear not being black.. that was matter of my own choice rather than any thoughtful consideration! I'll see when I get the time soon this month to fix whatever problem it is, I'd hate to leave it left unsatisfiable to you!

Definitely. And try not to be nervous drawing someone from behind! But regardless of which way they are facing, I still need to focus more on muscle structure certainly, since I feel quite confident with the proportions. Just gotta shape it right!

Thank you very much It's one of the prime examples of what artistic scope I am.
Lastly, I must apologise again for leaving another comment lingering for so long. My more overwhelmingly interested ones I tend to leave for later until I feel I can give my best response - hence I tend to answer the smaller, less thoughtful comments first - less effort, easy to push off, meaning easy to pass by my mind. These kind of comments stay with me however (:

I kinda sat here, staring between the picture and my keyboard for a while.

Nothing. Like the galaxies within the picture, any semblance of praise I could put together was sucked into some vacuous, awestruck black hole. There's just so many places to begin. The meaning and depth behind it all is simply stunning, as I'm sure you've gathered from others by now. xP

After staring a good while, I'd say my favorite part has to be the small lettering "Happy Birthday Grace". Yep. That. It shows the motive behind the picture, and the bond of friendship between people, and the picture is a result of what such bonds can produce.

She is indeed, a very good friend of mine I tried to piece things we both like, since we do have things in common, like our love for the stars. It means a mixture of things to use, but I'm sure it's readable as something different to someone else - interpretation is always open!

I think this is a really beautiful piece! This is really astounding!

Gee, the only thing I feel might need work is her torso, it feels a little too long and her right arm is a bit uneven to her left arm.

That is all, otherwise this is a great and strong piece!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enigmatia In reply to AnnaKlava [2010-10-24 01:36:08 +0000 UTC]

I am thinking maybe it's too narrow, rather than long, because her arm length seems to be quite ok in relation to it (arm looks shorter from the back, as I learnt reffing from my sister for that behind-back arm pose)

Thank you!

This is very impressive. At first, I thought it was a photo manipulation. I adore the way you did her skin and am tempted to ask how you colored it. xD;
The explanation for this figure is rather intriguing, reminding me of old creation myths and seeing just her back sort of adds an air of mystery to an already interesting idea. It might be a tad dark, but it works for the mood. This is really awesome!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enigmatia In reply to Mech-Maker [2010-10-17 23:36:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
If you want a quick answer for that, my colouring tools-of-the-trade are Paint Tool SAI, some tiny textures to buff away the extra-shininess of the skin, and I think most importantly, the right skin palette - heaps of them exist on dA with just one simple entry in the search engine. I have been trying to work on making my own without reference since this one though, so hopefully I'll get off those training wheels soon
And yes! I really like the idea of personifying giant forces, and the idea of a dancer seemed poetic and just suits my personal mindset really.

Ah, the darkness issue has been a problem of mine with other submissions, and you're not the first complain ^^' I think I just have one incredibly bright monitor compared to most others so I'll have to keep remembering to consider other's as well

Dammit. I did not fave it! Not seeing it in the gallery made me think you deleted it for some reason. *phew*

Mh, something I'd have a look at again are the shoulder blades. I tried checking it in the mirror, which was a little difficult, but the horizontal lines marking their position appears wrong to me - it should be more diagonal. I will search for a proper reference, wait...

So, yeah, the muscle-structure could have been a little better...but...that's all.

I love the stars and the galaxies, the planets and the overall lights...it gives the picture such a beautiful look!
I deeply love the atmosphere, this dreamy, wonderful, fantastic feeling it brings across.

I want to go to a shop, print it out as a big, glossy poster and write another comment. I love to look at it.

Aha, yeah I really fail at that, regardless if it's the front or back we're seeing.

Aww, as much as they were pretty, I had to use Brush Presets to make them, which means I can't take any credit for it. I also used a photo from NASA lightly overlayed. It looks nice though, I agree.
