Description                                      A Reason to Write

You've surely heard it's important, to read and write
and that writers are high priests, of an ancient religion
that bridges the physical and spiritual worlds
but doubted these claims, after seeing love for your craft
                                   flicker and fade away
but hear me, fellow writers and all who love a good story or song
there's still demand, for the treasures of the mind and heart
and the urge to create, or express ourselves,
                                       will never die

Do you remember your first reason to write?
did you long to tell tales of monsters and maidens, sorcerers and spirits,
virtuous goddesses that burn away the dark and wicked with the power of truth,
and heroes clad in the armor of sacred beasts,
in an attempt to rival the greatest epics and romances ever wrote?
or amuse others, with the mishaps of scoundrels, hypocrites, and
                               foolish mortals falling in love
maybe you tried to do both at once, and tried to write about every such thing,
as most young poets surely understand
you strove to compose music from raw observation or sentiment
and touch the hearts of all those who happened to read the poems you wrote
were you trying to woo attractive members of the opposite, or same, gender,
and become expert at making the stomach flutter and heart race
or solidify your inner darkness, and make people's stomachs turn and eyes tear
or turn observations of the world into profundity, in order to state poetic truths
a true poet can do all three, and combine them to make the heart stop
                                  and take the breath away
by translating your oftentimes awkward and unglamorous, yet deep, compassionate love
                                     into spoken verse
you've bequeathed to the world your heart and soul, which sing to the beat of life
and embolden the spirits of all humankind

As long as people enjoy stories and songs
and as long as blood flows through our veins
the world will still want writers
don't forget your first reason to write
and use it to move, educate, or entertain, the common man
to reason! to wit! to humanity! to laughter! to love!
to the enduring strength of the human heart!
I offer this song up to the heavens, and unto thee
my fellow writers and all who value the work we do
and I pray that you'll sing along with me...

This is awesome! I like this line "were you trying to woo attractive members of the opposite, or same, gender". xD
I love how spoken word poetry becomes so real and fun to listen to and watch, you can tell the performer is really passionate about their subject. I performed a slam poem (for two people, but still) expanded from my poems "Just a Woman" and "What is a Man?".

Thanks And no one batted an eye when I said that line (I guess most people in S.F are used to gays.) And to me, poetry is at its most powerful when performed. There's really no difference between songs and poems, and spoken word poetry has only been around for the last hundred years or so, everything else was lyrical or set to music. Your slam poem must have been well received, and I'd like to do more of them myself. This past semester, I declared myself a communication studies minor. Communication is an extremely important skill, and I want to combine oral communication and written communication to reach a wide range of people. The communication classes I plan on taking will help me make more of these kinds of poems, and I encourage you to try more poetry slams and things like that if you can.
