The Phoenix Project: Welcome to the 21st Century CE:

This was made for The Survival Road Contest! , sponsored by ManipulateThis and
Stewed-Tomatoes , Level 2, Beginner.

Theme:  (1) Living In A Post-Apocalyptic World, Long After The Apocalypse Where Humans Survive.

(2) Traveling In a Post-Apocalyptic World. At Least One (1) Post-Apocalyptic Vehicle Must Be Included.

(3) Use Two (2) or more of the Provided Model Stock (See Details).

End Date: September 30th, 2016. Limit 2 Entries.

Memo: The moderator entered this as a Non-Competitive entry, citing the bio-plastic renderings as not meeting the post-apocalyptic theme.
Of course, in a post-climate change/ post-apocalyptic world, anything not adapted to run on bio-fuel isn't going to get very far.

----------------------------------------------------

The inheritors of The Phoenix Project face a unique challenge: dragging humanity back to civilization, after “The Collapse”, without making the same mistakes.

The biospheres were hidden in the Canadian Arctic, built originally as a secure communications base; and then, a heritage seed vault and renewable energy research centre, in the mid-20th century, protected first by glaciers and later by force fields.

The Project’s foundations were poured during The Cold War, and hidden as “ephemera” in the budgets of Commonwealth  countries.

When The Collapse came, in the early 21st century, it was sudden.

The petrochemical industry’s incessant exploration and fracking poisoned drinking water and destabilized geology, throughout the world.

Governments were unable to respond to the contamination and challenges of climate change, after years of cutbacks, tax cuts, and trillions in debt, from wars.

Now, in the mid-21st Century, Captain Ann, Chief Engineer Nina, Docteur Louise, and the others face the challenge of dragging humanity back to civilization.

The challenge is not only the pirates threatening the few pockets of rennaissance.

But, also simple attrition, maintaining the machines, replacing components and biopolymers, rendered with 3D printers, and replenishing their supplies.

The world had changed in ways Dr. Terry Jones, the first director of this “Ark”had never foreseen when The Phoenix Project began.

The road back to civilization was proving far longer and more arduous than anyone had ever imagined.

The Phoenix Project: Welcome to The 21st Century:

“Well?” Ann asked, riding up on her Andalusian, Sam.

Nina looked up from inspecting the bits of worn gears, which they’d spent the morning fishing out of the harbour. She pushed her magnifying goggles up over her forehead, “She’s done for, Captain. It’s the manifold valve on the main  intake. Something got caught in its maw, and she splintered. She’s a mess, to be sure.”

“Well, Chief? Do we have a replacement, or can we AM the part?” Ann asked.

Nina bit her lip, “There isn’t a spare. But, we can rely on the secondary back-ups, for now; and, the water recycling, for now.”

“There should be enough syrup to AM a bioplastic replacement with the 3D printers,” Nina said.

“But, that would be it, for the supplies?” Ann clarified.

Nina nodded, “Probably.”

“What about the floatplanes?” Ann asked, weighing their options. “Are they up for a supply run?”

“Flying down south to the Gulf?” The Chief wondered, looking to Tess, who shrugged.

“It’s not time for a scheduled run, Ma’am,” Tess reminded her.

“Is the concern pirates or weather?” Ann asked.

“Both, this time of year,” Tess answered.

“But, it is possible?” Ann pressed.

“Aye, Captain,” Tess said.

Ann considered for a moment, looking out over the harbour, where two of the electric, converted canard floatplanes were coming in for a landing.

“AM a replacement with the syrup that’s left, Chief,” Ann concluded.

“And, prep the planes for a supply run. We’ll have to decide later, if they’re headed south, to the Gulf, for cane sugar, or West for beets,” she said.

“Could we use birch sap, Chief?” Jean asked, “The log books say that’s been used before, when syrup ran too short to render replacement parts.”

“Aye, that’s true,” Nina agreed.

“Very good,” Ann was encouraged. It was always best to have more than one option. “Assign someone to look into that.

“But, water first,” she reminded their Chief Engineer. “Clean water is always the first priority,” she said.

“If our ancestors had realized that, instead of thinking people could drink oil and eat money, maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess, now.”

“Aye, Captain,” Nina said.

Ann watched everyone getting back to work:

Wei and Len nursing some more life out of the fuel cells, for the scooters and motorcycles;

Lou, with their youngest, Chloe, looking on;

Sandy, Deb, and others, cold and wet, scavenging the harbour for any salvageable parts.

“There’s still a long road ahead of us,” Ann sighed.

Memo:

These are the ancestors of those who survive to rebuild civilization in the astounding year three thousand, in Terra: 3K CE ,
And, the legendary stories of Rocket Robin Hood , in the fantastic future to come.
So, they do survive to make a future, somehow.

Notes:

[1] 3D printing , or additive manufacturing (AM), refers to rendering a three-dimensional  object [1]  under computer control  . [2]

Objects can be of almost any shape from a 3D model

[2] Bioplastics are plastics  derived from renewable biomass , such asvegetable fats and oilscorn starch , or microbiota . [1]

Bioplastic can be made from agricultural by-products . Fossil-fuel plastics  (also called petrobased polymers), are derived from petroleum  or natural gas .

Bioplastics can be composed of starchescellulosebiopolymers , and other materials.

[3] Tidal energy is a form of hydropower  that converts tides  into electricity. Tidal generators can be even more reliable than wind energy  and solar power , as a source of renewable energy . The earliest examples date to the Middle Ages and Roman times . [2]

[4] The Phoenix , in Greek mythology , is a long-lived bird that regenerates.. [2]

[5] The Phoenix Project uses designs similar to the pods used in Ontario Place , for the biospheres , built in Toronto Harbour , to manage wave stresses.

[6] Radomes: a portmanteau  of radar and dome , a radome is an enclosure that protects a microwave  , radar ), or antenna .  These are geodesic .

Hopefully, humans will learn to respect water and nature, before it’s too late, for everyone;
instead, of trying to force people to drink oil and contaminated water, for the profit of a few.
