Description

Welcome to Eutopolis [Bienvenue à tous, à l'Eutopolis]

Eutopolis is a Mega-City : a conglomerate of a number of cities and municipalities along the Canadian Shield and Great Lakes which were incorporated into single political entity, as a City-State, as an adjunct to the Provincial and Federal legislative bodies, in Canada , in the Mid-21 st Century of The Common Era.

---------------

Submitted to: Futuristic Ecological City Contest , hosted by Elysian-Mark and Alaurentia-Culture

Theme: Create a futuristic ecological city, village, settlement, where Nature is at the core of it, and the buildings and infrastructures are in harmony with it.

Nota Bene: This contest is purely for Visual Art (digital painting, vector drawing, photomanipulations, etc.)

Due Date:  To 31st April to submit to the Contest Folder

Addendum: Write a brief introduction to your concept, in the description.

-------------------

Update:
There were some missing credits. Everything should be accounted for now.
The idea was to use an amalgam of images; so, it could be any city, with a new Green Skin,
to help things run healthier, with fewer toxins, energy waste, or heat and pollution build-up.
---------------------
Name: Eutopolis

From-

[1] eu- Prefix

    1.     goodwell

From Ancient Greek   εὖ (eû, “well, good”)-

-----------

[2] Eutopia (plural Eutopias )

    1.     A place of ideal  well-being , as a practical  aspiration  (compared with utopia  as an impossible concept).

-----------

[3] Megalopolis: From  mega- (“great”) +‎  -polis (“city”), from Ancient Greek   μεγα- (mega-, “prefix meaning ‘large’”) + π όλις (pólis, “city”). [1]

Welcome to Eutopolis (An Excerpt, from the Cat Archives, at University College)

“Welcome to Eutopolis!” Jane announced, sweeping her arm in a wide arc, ushering me closer to the balustrade, to see the city. “From here we can see The Tubes, The Sculpture Garden patio, and everything,” she said.

“Carefully,” Jane said. “May I?” She asked, offering to take my arm, to help steady me: I was still a bit shaky on my feet.

“Yes, thank you,” I said...

Jane helped steady me…

It was… discombobulating to see my city… but, so different, it was like viewing the city through a kaleidoscope.

There was greenery- everywhere! On every surface that wasn’t covered with solar cells… there were plants and tendrils growing over everything, like… The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

- towers in the downtown core were designed as ziggurats… to avoid… pollution canyons forming on the streets below.

There were shade canopies everywhere, which were also being exploited to collect solar power or as a platform to grow more greenery…

“Nothing goes to waste,” Jane explained…  “We can’t afford it, not anymore.”

I pointed and signed, "Train"

"Mag-Lev," Jane explained, "Zero friction lost."

"Bubble?" I signed, over the train.

She nodded, "Bio-Plastics," Jane said. "No Petro-Chem." I nodded: that made sense...

Then, it struck me, for all the foot traffic in the big city, there were no cars, except for a few service vehicles and delivery vans... And, the vehicles weren’t making any noise…

“So quiet?” I said, indicating the vehicles.

Jane nodded, “Electric Fuel Cells,” she explained…

“No smoke?” I gestured...

Again, Jane nodded, “Scrubbers,” she said. “Air pollution, even personal air pollution, like scents, and such, are considered a Trespass, under The Charter of Rights.”

I shook my head, shrugging, “How?”

She smiled, “Governments started enforcing the laws,” she explained.

"Most of the laws were already on the books: for taxes and the environment," she said. "It was just a matter of enforcing them," she shrugged.

“But, how?” I rubbed my fingers together, in the universal sign for money.

Jane laughed, “Corporations and their people started acting like responsible citizens,” she said.

“After The COVID Crisis and financial failure, corporations realized they had to step up and act like citizens: they couldn’t do business, if people and government couldn’t survive.”

“After the COVID Crisis, everything [was] decentralized. It had to be.”

“And, if they didn’t get it, The Courts enforced it,” she concluded.

“That’s how Eutopolis became incorporated as a Megalopolis,” Jane said.

It was so much to take in, I felt suddenly weak. Jane caught me up and eased me over to a bench, in the shade.

“How long?” I asked, breathlessly.

“How long were you asleep?” She asked.

I nodded and signed, “Yes.”

“About seventy years, I think,” Jane said…

It was hard to believe; but, it would have to be. There were so many changes.

“At least, we survived,” I whispered.

“It was a near thing; but, yes,” Jane nodded.

"Well, that's something."

The Carob Tree Story [From the Babylonian Talmud ]

(This reminded me of the story of Honi , 1st Century)

---------------

One day Honi was journeying on the road and he saw a man planting a carob tree. He asked, "How long does it take [for this tree] to bear fruit?"

The man replied: "Seventy years."

Honi then further asked him: "Are you certain that you will live another seventy years?"

The man replied: "I found [already grown] carob trees in the world; as my forefathers planted those for me so I too plant these for my children."

------------

When he awoke he saw a man gathering the fruit of the carob tree and Honi asked him, "Are you the man who planted the tree?"

The man replied: "I am his grandson."

Thereupon Honi exclaimed: "It is clear that I have slept for seventy years."

So, it looks like this occurs sometimes between the present and The Phoenix Project: Shipyards (in 3k C.E.).

------------
Addendum:

People keep saying, “When things get back to normal…”

But, one thing we’ve seen with the COVID-19 Crisis is that a decrease in air pollution can have a dramatic effect in very short order.

“Normal” has proven so inadequate; maybe, we should be striving to do better.

Hopefully, cities will be healthier. It's ironic, that the reduced pollution from the COVID lockdown,
is actually making cities healthier. Maybe, it will catch on.
------------

European lockdown could lead to 11000 fewer air pollution deaths ..

Hmmm. As much as I'm completely for healthier city and less pollution, it mustn't come at the price of our freedom. I do believe if the population would be allowed self-sufficiency and self-discovery (which nearly NO countries allow), it would result in the future we all dream of. Self-sufficiency would mean no reliance on absurdly big agricultural industries; self-energy would mean no reliance (and bribes) from big energy corporations that have to destroy mountains, drain lakes and rivers, and deforest entire hills. If every community would be allowed to take care of itself, then pollution would drastically drop, because we're not asking a huge corporation/industry to do things for everyone.

But it's hard to do in countries where greenhouses for year-long food are limited to 25 square meter in area, which is not nearly enough for even a couple; where darn potatoes are regulated as to when and which can one plant them... Where honey-making must require permits and registration, and fees, to a corporation...

It's bonkers. The world could be literally be healthier tomorrow.
Except a few people think they can wring out a few more dollars out of it, before they pass on.
