I wanted to show the end of their relationship. Even if they had a truly loving one at some point, it's obvious that that just disappeared somewhere along the line.The causes were (if you didn't catch it) Epsilon screwing with Wash causing him to grow dependant on South, and South not being prepared to take on that kind of responsibility.

And she wasn't even in the chip then, it was just something that would hold her when the Chief got her back because he refused to think that he wouldn't. And then he promised to come back to her and later to get her fixed. I don't have the gif, but... their love is legendary.
