A lot of years in these steps, a lot of texture and feel to them, but something you might not really notice is that the lady sitting there at her doorway is next to one big step, which is very typical of many old Chinese houses. It actually has a function too, ever have water come flooding under the door into your house when it rained hard? And to think the Chinese came up with this idea thousands of years ago, and over there in americaville they stick a piece of rubber under the door that doesn't work. for this shot I used a 17mm lens that gave me a huge feild of view and then got very close to the ground. Rule of photography #14: dont take every photo at the same level

That woman looks sooo small. It really accentuates the proportions of the steps and building. The composition in this shot is excellent, and the green of the tree at the focal point of the image makes it kind of surreal. I'm pretty sure you didn't consider the tree when you took the shot, but it works nicely.

I have a bad habit of not looking beyond the subject sometimes to the background of my photos when I shoot, or not really paying attention, sometimes I just get lucky, like here, im pretty sure I didnt notice the tree back there but somehow in a lot of my shots it all kinda works out

I'm learning every time I look at one of your pictures. Learning about China, which is a fascinating unknown world to me, learning about photo, composition, and colors.... The ascending movement in this one is just a pleasure for the eyes !

that is quite funny how simple of an engineering idea that is yet america has yet to get it. if i build a house i will most certainly use this bit of chinese engineering.

A very interesting and captivating composition. I find the old woman a bit distracting, or I did at first, but now I find the paradox between the years and years, far beyond a human lifetime that the steps have survived and the life of a simple woman living by the steps. It is extremely simbolic, somethink that we all at one point in our lives think about!
SIEMPRE VIVA (live forever) is what I would call this photograph. One should see beyone the stone, beyond the ashes. It is history, it if life, it is continuosity. Time opens to us. The woman will never see it, but the steps, history, the universal continuosity will see the world slip into eternity.
It is a very correct pomposition, very vivid colours, it makes the phoograph almost graphic in nature. I like the dark tones, the balck tones on the sides of it, though I beleive that only one side being dark would have been better, and reinforced the entire idea of mortality vs eternety. Any photoshop at all?

This is wonderful. I love the perspective you chose for this particular shot, which makes the steps seem more dramatic and somehow emphasized than if you just shot them flat out.
This photograph also makes it seem as if one is emerging from the dark into the light, which I agree creates a good atmosphere.
In terms of engineering, of course the Chinese were way ahead of people here in the United States of America. Technology is so powerful now, and instead of using it to our benefit on a worldwide perspective, we choose to creates explosives and the like. It makes no sense, if you ask me.
I love how in each of your photographs, you preserve a moving part of Chinese history and it's tradition buried deep in alleyways and hidden street corners that most people don't get to see, or at least won't open their eyes to.
