Thanks! I wish I could estimate the time. I jump around from file to file (I get 'stuck' a lot and have to start up a new one. Then when I figure out how to do what I do, I jump back!

I can see the wireframe screen shots of some of your work that is classified as vector, but as a long time vector artist myself, and as I said the other day under another drawing of yours classified as vector, I know of no way of reproducing fine details such as skin pores (especially in the highlights on her right cheek) or fine lines on people's foreheads, even by using Illustrator's mesh tool, unless Adobe updated the mesh tool in version 5 some way that I'm unaware of; I could read up on that, I guess.
I know the gradient mesh tool can be used for convincing, photo realistic skin tones, but I don't see how one gets pores and fine lines (skin wrinkles) with it. That kind of detail work is more the province of Photoshop.
I do agree with a previous poster that this looks more like a digital painting or manipulated photo. If you used Photoshop in conjunction with Illustrator, that's fine, but I would think that would be classified as 'mixed digital media,' rather than 'vector'.
Maybe you could provide us with more screen shots of these vector pieces, ones showing the gradient mesh alone, and/or in conjunction with any masks or layers with this drawing, or something like that?
If you're on the up and up about this (and I sure hope you are), I'd like to see how it's done so I can maybe give it a try myself in the future, on future vector drawings.

Thank you for the links, but I can't seem to open the first one (I haven't tried the second one).
The zip folder I downloaded is empty, and the file on my desktop that came with that folder is showing up as something called a ".part" file, not an AI file.
I have version 4 of AI, not 5, so I don't know if I could even open a v 5.

Strange. Other people have been able to download and open the ZIP just fine... Let me know if the second one doesn't work for you. The only thing I'm using in CS5 that CS4 didn't have is the ability to control the transparency of different points on a single mesh. It may open, but if it does, the seams between shapes aren't going to blend well.

Thanks! That's why I started working in gray-scale. It's easier to deal with shades of gray when working in the detail.

that makes a lot of sense. you could probably still make a super awesome one in color, though. i just find trying to make all of the colors and details go where i want them to so frustrating. how long have you been making meshes?
