Description “Only the best, for my bestest little buddy.”

—-

So. Stitch. My favorite character. Out of all the characters, ever created. Period.

I’ve absorbed Stitch into who I am since the second I saw him. The way he moved, talked, the way his character and personality cackled out of the screen, grabbed my attention and my heart the moment I saw him in 2002. Those things are a big part of why I decided to become an artist. But it was the story that revolved around him that made me choose my career.

Stitch is not like Aladdin. He doesn’t have to learn to be honest about himself to be victorious. Stitch isn’t like Quasimodo. He doesn’t have to learn to be confident and stop caring what people think of him. Stitch isn’t like Mulan. He doesn’t have to learn to be true to who he is to save the day.

Stitch is not, deep down inside, good.

Stitch is a monster. Stitch is the villain of his movie. Stitch is not his own hero.

Stitch begins his story where most Disney films end; the bad guy is captured, being sent to his just punishment. But there’s nothing, inside of him, that is good. He’s naughty, he’s evil, and the whole point of him is to tear down everything he touches. Literally. But he comes to Earth, and he does not save himself. Stitch’s lead animator described him as being “infected with the germ of love, which ruins his programming.” Lilo unconditionally loves him, adopts him into her family, and in so doing, he is made a new creation.

Stitch is like you and me. On our own, we actually can’t be better than our natural state. We’ll always have the gaping hole where a family, and belonging, should be. We need someone from the outside to come and fix us, make us new. You may find what you like in the film Lilo & Stitch, but that theme is what rang truest when I watched it. If we can accept and love Stitch, as a character who doesn’t say “all you gotta do is be yourself and believe in you,” we can accept that that slogan doesn’t fit us, either. And it’s that relatable story, told in such a unique, simple, beautiful way, that I was inspired by. Stitch is my favorite.

Happy Stitch Day!

Stitch was created by Chris Sanders and belongs to Disney!
