Mmmhhhh... Well... You should think in a Canon 1000D, which have been released just 2 months later than the Canon XSi. The Canon XSi has more mp, but the 1000D has more quality and, as always, quality allows a better image re-scaling if desired.
The Canon's XXXD have a type of sensor which is called APS-C, which means that it's smaller than a 35mm film or full frame sensor. The APS-C cannot afford more than 10.1 mp because surpassing that limit will generate more noise and more blurry images due the overwhelming pixel condensation in such small sensor. The Canon XSi has surpassed that limit and they've added a low pΓ ss filter before its sensor in order to lower the noise generated by such amount of mp. I don't know how good it is, but reviews says that the Canon 1000D should have been the new XSi and not the 450D.
Just think that the 1000D was released 2 months later than the 450D, I guess the XSi was more like a prototype than a final product.
If you like and want, you can buy a Nikon D700, which is a dream, the perfect camera which will allow you to take pictures in whatever light conditions with a superb quality, but it's more expensive.

hmm. to my knowledge 1000D or Rebel XS is lower and cheaper model then xsi. see this info right here

and for $70 more I rather get little better camera..
Nikon D700 maybe great, but i just don't want to spend that much money... its just a hobby..

A good one. I have a Nikor 50mm f/1.4 D for FX format (my only lens ^^, they're quite expensive). You should think in lenses without zoom (don't know how to spell it in English, sorry). If Canon, some AF L or Red Ring will help.
