Brilliant.

Every element would still be fantastic if isolated - the iconic rider design, the unique creature's shape, the bright reflected light. Realism and stylization is fused perfectly.

Yet these masterfully executed aspects don't distract from the main, stunning feature: movement. It's such a perfect balance between motion and a still-image - something I've never seen quite like this. The extremity of the tail stretching just beyond 50 percent of the image, the tilt of the creature's foot, and the angle the rider leans out at are truly awesome.

Easily one my favorite art-pieces of all time.

Thank you for creating this.

The very first thing that struck me about this was that I had that moment's thought that people who work on action shots strive for: I expected it to actually MOVE. The way the shrew has braced itself, with tiny highlights of detail to show the strain, and the tilt of the figure bring enormous action to this on just an initial glance. From there, the brush strokes have created wonderful subtle lines that point in exactly the right direction to suggest the speed these two are moving at. There's a lovely little addition of dust behind them, showing their previous path, and the figure's face points the eye back toward their new trajectory in a wonderful expression of direction in a work.

While I love that the blurred strokes of the background help contribute to a feeling of great speed, there is a strange contrast between the detailing of the figure and the rest of the painting that might be better balanced with a few tiny more touches of details to the foreground. Perhaps a rock or bit of sand closer to the shrew to help illustrate the momentary stillness of a sudden turn, or to show some more texture to the surface (sand? stone? dirt?)? Additionally, there is just not as strong a sense of depth or scale as I might have liked to see, to really show how close or far the shrew is from the background, or what that background even really is. Is this an enormous shrew, or a very tiny woman? Are we near blades of grass or are these trees?

However, the impact of the piece is hard to argue with when viewed as a whole and you can practically hear the skitter of nails on the ground. Great technique, and thoughtful use of color for light and shadow. An intriguing subject, and an original pose make this an overall wonderful work.

Of course! I saw your work in the favorites of another artist I admire and thought "wow!" When I saw you wanted a critique I thought it only fair to offer what I could since you'd elicited such a reaction.

Echoing what athenapallas87 Γ‚ said below about the pose and movement. Absolutely convincing.

I want to take a shrew to work tomorrow.

Very nice. The rider leaning to her left, and looking not where the shrew is currently going, but where she want's it to go is fantastic. Here is a mount and rider that work as one. The angle of the shrews legs combine with that of the rider indicating a change in momentum and direction that is underway. Adding to the speed of these two, is the dust trail left by this quick footed mount. That you have chosen to obscure the background in a complete blur of colors does justice to the movement captured in this moment.

i love this one! there is so much movement and speed in this picture. you really did a great job giving this impression using this blurred painting style but also the pose implys speed and movement. apart of your -in my opinion- unquestionable painting skills, i also love the content of the image! could i ask you if you depicted the mouse to be extraordinary big, so a human could ride it or did you depict the human like beeing on top of it to be very small, beeing able to ride a mouse of normal size?
would love to see more of this (fantasy-)style (maybe some more members of the same tribe, a hunt or or something?)! keep up the good work and thanks for sharing such inspiration!

Thanks, I appreciate it!

In my mind the girl is really small, possibly an elf of some sort. Β However, there's really no way to know the scale from this image. In the future I'll try to add more context. Β I'm working on some similar fantasy illustrations now.
