After looking at this for a few years it's still one of my favorites from you. The interaction of the girl and bear is exceptional. Another thing that stands out to me is the way you elegantly simplified the the hair and fur.
And, as usual, the colors and lighting are amazing.

Thanks Rhys! This is one card assignment that I actually loved. The image, practically as it is here, jumped into my head as I was reading the brief. I wish it was always that way.

Great narrative / character relationship.
Do you have any advice on how you are able to keep your rendering so loose, but still communicate all the volumes and form? I struggle with being too tight with my work.

Thanks Joel!
Much of that looseness is just an illusion really. I spend a lot of time refining my brush strokes in order to achieve that effect.
I think once you've got a solid drawing in place (which is crucial), you can give it a loose feel by adding variation to the edges. A lot of sharp edges will tend to look tight, so I try to add a nice balance of soft and lost edges.
I see you do a lot of (really great) line work. I don't have much experience with that style, but I assume the line art equivalent of soft and lost edges would be broken and vanishing/implied lines.
For loose painting though, big brush strokes are also important for getting that look. If you can say with one stroke what you would would with several smaller ones, it will feel more spontaneous and dexterous. This is something I'm still working to improve!

Thanks for the compliment on my line work. I'm always looking to improve, but I'm quite confident in my line work. Much appreciated. As you can imagine, the mental shift from very controlled line work to more painterly work is a big challenge. I can see what you mean about vanishing and broken lines. I'm still struggling with the best technique for edge control in a painting. Hopefully taking some of that thought process with my line work - line weight and broken lines - will help me wrap my brain around a new process while painting.
I should really just practice on some of my existing line art. I've been watching some Knockwurst  videos on YouTube and trying to pick up a few tips to incorporate into my work.

This is such a beautiful painting, it really caught my eye!
My favorite thing about this piece is how bright and cheery everything is! The colors are warm and inviting, but not overwhelming. There's a nice balance of warm and cool lighting -- just the right amount of cool tones to suggest that it's an outdoor scene, without diminishing the shine of the warmer tones.
I do feel that the level of detail is a little uneven. There are some really tiny, crisp details on the little mouse, but the bear's face is quite vague with much wider brush strokes. A few well-placed details could really bring balance to the painting without sacrificing that amazing texture and painted look. Just a bit of small brushwork around the bear's eyes and lips, and the girl's as well, would bring their expressions more into focus.
I feel that the cropping of the painting could have been done a little differently. When I have the top half of the image filling my screen, it looks totally complete. Then I scroll down, and find that there's an equal amount of canvas left, but with very little subject matter occupying the space. I think it would have looked just as nice, or nicer, as a landscape-oriented painting, consisting solely of what is currently the top half. (:
I do love the way the bear's cheek squishes against her arm. It has weight and shape to it that looks touchable! Those floppy lips are curled into a perfect expression of dopey adoration, with just the slightest hint of teeth showing through. The girl's expression is equally perfect, with graceful downcast eyes and a big warm smile. Drawing a grin like that isn't easy, it's a fine line between realistic and uncanny valley... but honestly, you've captured her face perfectly.
Also, this is going to sound really weird, but from an artistic point of view, I love the way you painted her nose! The warm tones underneath, the flat bridge and little button curves.. it's perfect!
Anyway, congratulations on the Daily Deviation! I'm glad to have found this gorgeous painting!
