neat creature, i like the single pointy foot and locomotion method.

It's like somebody put a cookiecutter shark on a pogo stick. It's bloody ridiculous, yet terrifying!

This is borderline terrifying, a deadly faceless eating-machine that pogo-stcks its way across the savannah... very original and very creepy!

What if it falls over?

a large portion of the brain and a specific organ is devoted to balance, so its rare that it would topple over.

Hmm.. okay, I guess I can see it working pretty well.

I had glanced over and dismissed this one while looking through the other aliens in your gallery, I guess because I did not get it. But looking at it closer now, a little later, I have to say, what an ingenious design. Fantastic!

I'm glad you gave it a second chance and saw it in a different light. I am glad you grew to like it!

I imagine they must have some kind of internal balancing organ, like the inner ear. They also probably can't stop moving once they start, like a shark.
I agree with Zippo, this is indeed very original. I love monopods; nothing better than an animal that just hops on one leg. In fact they say that hopping is the most efficient form of movement there is, even more than walking or swimming.

thanks, i'm glad you like it. you imagined right, its pretty much an inner ear with teeth. I love pushing biology to points where its almost unfathomable for something to function. I always think of the pterosaurs, looking at its skeleton a creature of that size should never be able to fly let alone anything else but somehow it managed to due so and conquered the skies.
thanks again!

If you like those kinds of things you might check out some of the projects made by members of my Speculative Evolution forum . Some of them are really alien, like the 2D geometroids made by our user Kain.

i would speculate that they are not moving much, unless hunting. laying flat and waiting for the next moment to pounce.
Wow thank you very much! I totally agree with you, I use "mammal" etc mostly to help viewers conceptualize better what they are looking at but in some ways it displaces the reality i am trying to create. So I definitely will be taking that into consideration.
thanks for all the help and interest

So they use this spear thing for both hunt and locomotion?
π: 0 β©: 1
Vincent-Covielloart In reply to Charanty [2011-07-07 22:10:22 +0000 UTC]
they "catapult" themselves with the spear "leg" and glide, due to the thrust of its "leg". they have serrated teeth and barbs that circle its mouth. once it attaches itself to a prey item its pretty much attached, unless it releases its hold.
they are pack hunters so they bring down prey due to cooperation and multiple hunters.
