Description Not all mythological vampires are quite... so dignified as their European kin (and yes, I mean even in the sense that strigoi are slavering corpses that may also be lycantropes, burn in the sun, and so on...). This makes them no less vicious, mind you, but their appearance and methodology... can seem a little unusual next to those counterparts.

Enter the Yara-ma-yha-who [link] an aboriginal demon with a taste for blood. In essence more a boogie man than a true vampire, it's traits are still menacing and deadly:

"The yara-ma-yha-who lived in the tops of fig trees and did not hunt for food, but waited until unsuspecting victims sought shelter under the tree. It then jumped down and placed its hands and feet on the body. It would drain the blood from the victim to the point the person was left weak and helpless, but rarely, to cause the victim to die. The creature would later return and consume its meal. It then drank water and took a nap. When it woke, the undigested portion of its meal would be regurgitated. According to the story, the person regurgitated was still alive, and children were advised to offer no resistance should it be their misfortune to meet a yara-ma-yha-who. Their chances of survival were better if they let the creature swallow them.

People might be captured on several occasions. Each time, they would grow a little shorter until they were the same size as the yara-ma-yha-who. Their skin would first become smooth and then they would begin to grow hair all of their body. Gradually they were changed into one of the mythical little furry creatures of the forest. "

Regardless of how odd a vampire it may be, I am fairly certain the Yara-ma-yha-who can still beat the ever loving shit out of the so-called sparkle-pus vampire Edward Cullen.

did you give the cryptid wiki permission to use your artwork for their yara-ma-yha-who page?

I did not specifically, but as it is not for profit and being used in the correct context, it does not particularly bother me (I notice that it, and my nuckelavee image have circulated to several different sites on mythological creatures).  I vastly PREFER credit (and would like if the site owners would link back to this page), but in this singular particular incidence, it doesn't much bother me.

I see. I had seen stolen art from users here several times on their pages, and the admin merely shrugged saying it was other members uploading the images. If they would have notified you and credited I would see this a bit better. But alas, such is not the case, eh?

Ah yeah, that is deeply unfortunate.  I don't mean to take so much of a blase attitude toward art theft, but at this point, in regards to this particular image, I'm rather out of fight for it (usually I'd be much more frustrated and annoyed).

I mean, I get that ahaha. This isn't *particularly* personal character work but more of something for everyone? So I suppose lol.

Yes, indeed, since it is supposed to be just a critter illustration, it's not too personal, I suppose.

If I had to choose between being turned into this little guy, or a sparkle-pus, I'd pick the little guy.

HAH, that seems a safe enough bet I think. A good choice!

lol This kind of reminds me of a less-scarry version of a Squig (a creature from the game Warhammer) with arms. [link]
Wonderful job.

Wow this is awesome its hair reminds me of Mcgyver for some reason...But i can tell you one thing sparkly vampires can go jump chest-first onto a wooden stake and die

HAH! McGyver, must be the widow's peak and thinning sideburns. Thank you. Yes indeed, I'm quite convinced captain sparklepants is not, in fact, a vampire, but some particularly nasty species of fairy masquerading as 'vampires' to make themselves appear young and 'cool'.

As with your Sazaeoni, it looks realistically 3-D and has nice light reflection. For some reason it makes me think of a school bully. I like the knuckle-dragging and the empty sack of a stomach. Great job!

One question: Are those 4 eyes or 2 eyes and 2 nostrils?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Verdego In reply to Lee-Sherman [2009-05-01 15:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

It's two ears and two eyes, The larger, higher disks are it's amphibian-like ears, the lower, smaller, inset orbs are it's eyes.

Thank goodness that there are still untainted vampires in the world. Edward Cullen can sparkle himself to oblivion. He can take his fellow pop culture wuss-vamps with him.

This is a pretty interesting creature, I have never heard of the Yara-ma-yha-who. Did you paint this with a reference image in mind or did you make him up from scratch? He reminds me of another vampire, said to live on the British Isles, I think, that bit people's toes and killed them. I don't remember what it was called though...

Very cool! It's a little hard to tell that his eye is an eye, it looks a lot like the ear of an amphibian. The colour of the eye matches too close to the colour of the body. I would not wish to see this fellow in real life.

Verdego In reply to Phantasmagora [2009-04-20 18:12:39 +0000 UTC]

There is never enough Twilight rage in the world I swear... it's just... blasphemy. Vampires... do... not... sparkle *foams*.

I didn't have a visual reference, just the descriptive one of "a squat humanoid with a large head, red fur or skin, a large, toothless, frog-like mouth, and octopus-like suckers on its hands and feet" or something to that effect. Just the typical description of one, though accounts vary.

Ah, that ear that looks like an amphibian ear...is an amphibian ear... the little things that probably look a bit like nostrils are his eyes. Too subtle I think... but ah well, next time, next design.

I do not think I want to just go wandering in the Australian outback... though that has less to do with these fellows and more the threat of everything else deadly out there... plus the whole... giant desert thing.

Phantasmagora In reply to Verdego [2009-04-20 23:33:30 +0000 UTC]

Vampires do not sparkle in the sunlight. They BURN. They burn with RIGHTEOU-no wait -EVIL!

Oh it was an ear! Sorry about that, my bad. I think it was just the black outline that threw me off there initially.

I would have to agree... I wouldn't want to tempt the outback either... I'd be a crispy-burned taco in no time.

Hehehe. Righteous evil, I'm sure.

In an environment where even the TREES can be lethal in the right circumstance (read: in the rain... the sap is so acidic the water falling off the tree will burn holes in skin and metal), I think I would prefer to just hide under the bed and hope those 10 most venomous spiders in the world haven't decided to move in with me.

It looks...cuddly kind of! I like that it doesn't always totlaly devour it's er...victims. Edward would shit himself I think. Yes there would be skids in his pants I daresay.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Verdego In reply to ESG [2009-04-20 03:44:33 +0000 UTC]

Well it swallows you after draining your blood... then regurgitates you (and you're ok... except a tiny bit shorter and redder)... then does so again and again if it can, until you're one of them. But it probably just wants a hug... doesn't he look like he needs a hug? 'Cept he's probably poisonous... I'm not sure.

Also; HAHAHAHA sparkley skids no doubt.

ESG In reply to Verdego [2009-04-20 18:04:19 +0000 UTC]

Well that doesn't sound...too bad. I bet it smells. But yes it needs a hug.
lol sparkly skids.
You know what's worse about that?
When I lived in Barrie the term for goth/punk kids was "skids" aka scary kids.

LOL! Puts new meaning on Edward has skids in his pants now doesn't it.
