Description This is the first dress I can add to my stitcher portfolio.

This dress was made for Opera Theater St. Louis for the Opera "The Ghosts of Versaille".

The weird thing about being a theater stitcher is you never do anything from start to finish yourself. The costume designer for this play, James Schuette, handed our draper this ( [link] ) portrait of Marie Antoinette and some gorgeous fabrics and said 'make it'. The draper, Lee Viliesis, made the pattern.

With the exception of last-minute alterations, I constructed the dress. The dress has an underlayer of a pale gray silk. The overlayer I am not positive but I suspect if it wasn't all silk it was cotton with silk stripes. You can't see it, but the gray sash continues into a bow in the back. I had fun making it I'm tempted to make myself one but I'm so tiny I don't think I could pull it off.

Model: Erin Holland ("Woman with Hat")

Note: Don't use as stock, not my photo, so I'm not sure it's allowed to be used in anything other than my portfolio

The Chemise a la Reine!!!!! Oh, it's just brilliant! Excellent work! The red ribbon around the neck is a very nice touch!

The red neck garment, to me, seems to suggest decapitation. Love the outfit.

Pretty sure that's intentional. XD She is supposed to be a ghost after all, right?

Precisely! All of the ghosts in this show had a red accessory or costume decoration indicative of how they died. Glad you enjoyed it!

whoa, hey, how'd you get this photo? All I ever saw were the photos of the show itself, of which none of the outfits I did were ever shown...

Stacy announced on the last day that you could get a CD of the production pics if you signed up and left $3 for shipping. I've been meaning to upload them to my server but haven't gotten around to it since the files are huge. Were there specific ones you were looking for?

Just of the gray stripped watteau-back robe I did. Though I'd love to get a shot of the sheer panniers the dancers in the background wore. Could you e-mail me if you have any of those shots? I'd really appreciate it

Thanks... what I wouldn't give to have a professional photographer, model, and hair & make-up artist for all my costumes

There are some great tutorials here on dA on how to shoot good stock photographs. They would fit for this type of photography as well. Then all you have to do is find a model and learn how to do make up and hair.

I have to applause your detail work and I find it hard to believe you can't make a patten for this gown that would fit you. Some time things that seem to be the most impossible thing to design sometimes becomes the greatest thing you ever design. And talking about that I'm back on designing the 1750's Federal style home after getting over have brain rut. So good luck.

Thanks

I can easily make a pattern to fit me, but this style of dress looks better on bustier women. I feel on me it would be frumpy.

I'm pretty sure if you want to you would figure out a way to make it work.

Thanks

Theater's fun, nice to see what you've done on stage, it's just so weird not doing every step of the process myself

looks quite comfy and drapy - would be fun to have something like it methinks

Interesting to hear a bit about sewing for theater. I've thought that might be fun, but never seriously looked into it, though I'm thinking about it again.

anywho, looks like you did a great job as always!

It's pretty easy, and I've heard other costumers like chemise dresses because of the comfort.

You should look into theater! What I'm finding though is usually it's not year-long work, just a couple months at a time

hmm ok, interesting, yeah I could see it not being super regular.
