Description Kaneki and Tsukiyama, my favourites from Tokyo Ghoul! Done in soft pastels and some white paint for the hair highlights ^^
I particularly wanted to emphasise Kaneki's terror and Tsuki's manipulativeness, so it has ended up quite different from the original reference I looked at: th07.deviantart.net/fs71/300W/…

Any thoughts welcome! <3 sorry about the delay too! although I recently joined Instagram  and you are welcome to follow me there

Hello Vasya!

I just saw this beautiful piece of traditional manga art,a - regrettably - rarity on DA.Let me take a closer look now:

First of all I noticed your intense colouring,I really like the deep shadows on their bodies and faces.Especially your black and red tones attracted my eye.
It´s hard to decide if your drawing is in manga style or more realistic. If you´re aiming an realistic portrait you shouldn´t make the eyes that big and I would add some more details in general on their faces and fingers. If it´s done in Manga style, you´re quite close to the original(as far as I can review it - I don´t know the manga and I´m no manga fan at all.)
Your style itself is very beautiful,I really wish some more people would give traditional art the love it deserves and as I said before, traditional drawn manga is a real rarity in the DA community.
Something about'Originality'.I respect other´s opinions about fanart but in my eyes I really can´t say it´s new and unique.I´ve seen the same characters in similar poses in too many galleries.I´m sorry,I can´t give you a high rating at this point.

All in all this is surely a wonderful piece and I hope we´ll see more of it soon!
Greetings,
Ambergris

Oh hey its nice to hear from you! Thank you for being honest and true to your opinion! I think I'm trying to head towards realism, but often I'm scared of straying too far from the traditional manga style in case i mess up and they don't end up looking like the characters... honestly though, I think i may give up fan art soon, I'm better at the traditional stuff if anything.
Really happy you like the medium, i really do enjoy using pastels.
Thanks again Ambergris

You´re welcome,Vasya

I think it´s a bit difficult to change manga characters in realistic ones and of course these character will look different in the end.
It´s your decision,I personally always prefer original art and I´m sure you can do more than just drawing other´s characters.
Yes,your pastell are indeed great,I like how you experiment with different media.

Wow. All I can say is, this is incredible!!! I've never done a critique before, but I thought that this piece would be a perfect place to start. Bear with me here, I'll try to break it down properly :3

Vision: When I look at your works (and this is no exception!), I get the immediate impression that what I'm seeing is a definite statement, an illustrated commentary you're making on your subject. Your pieces speak, they have words and character, and I believe that without extensive planning and a clear vision, they would not possess this innate power. After all, this is fan art, which by definition is derivative... nonetheless, you manage to bring your own 'spin', your own perspective, to the work that makes it stand out and separate itself from others like it.

Originality: Okay, first the obligatory 'ding' for this being fan art. Like I said a moment ago, fan art=derivative by default, but given I'm a fan artist myself, I can't penalize you too hard. And besides, what you've done is only 'fan art' by nature of the fact that it portrays licensed characters. Without a doubt, you've brought your own signature style and interpretation to bear on this piece. There's no better proof of this than the fact that I was able to recognize this piece in my notifications as one of yours, even before I saw your name below it. Not many artists I've seen on here, particularly so-called 'fan artists', use this kind of pastel work with heavy, muted colors to create expressive, professional-quality pieces.

Technique: Your understanding of light and shadow (and the way you apply it in your color work), combined with your extensive abilities with a variety of mediums, earn you top marks in this category!! Doing fan art is one thing, doing it so incredibly well is another thing entirely. I wouldn't know the first thing about pastels, for example, but I have to assume they're far from being the easiest choice of medium to use in something like this. But yet, not only do you use them again and again, but you make them look so damn good!!! I also think the heavy shadows, and the balance of light and dark elements in the frame, is just right... again and again, my eye is drawn upward to their faces, which is where the emotion and power of the piece is at its strongest.

Impact: Wow. I gotta say, I'm a sucker for your Tokyo Ghoul pieces, because you really know how to catch the essence of the characters and their emotions, and recreate it in a still image. I was saving it until the end to talk about, but ultimately, the best part of the piece lies in the expressions. So subtle, but yet so powerful!! The relationship between Kaneki and Tsukiyama is rather twisted and complex (which is why it's so fascinating xD), and I think you very clearly did it justice here. Their faces are almost expressionless, at first glance, but to me there's a hint of something sinister in Tsukiyama's eyes, and in Kaneki's, I see definite fear and loneliness. But the subtlety in which you've communicated these emotions is what is so remarkable. It's easy to show emotion with big, exaggerate gestures and facial expressions, but what you've done here is much more difficult!!

From start to finish, corner to corner, this is an incredible piece!! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="60" title="Clap"/>

(P.S.) Sorry for any typos e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="417" title="Sweating a little..."/>

Hehe all your previous comments were like mini critiques anyway! xD Really, really appreciate you've done this though. I had mixed feelings about the outcome, i feel like I've actually started losing confidence in fanart ._. its cuz I'm becoming more interested in realism these days I think.. but i'll stop rambling there xD
I think I'm most happy that the lighting and expressions were effective, it was really fun to experiment (like with those vertical lines along the side)
Thanks so much again! I feel honoured that you recognise my style!

BUT PLS, don't be rude and add link to that reference (as u did on another deviant). You're so talented in traditional art but this is the worst thing ever to discover that your art and ur idea was redrawed by someone without any mention and I'm sure you'd be so upset if something like this will happen to you. ; )

Great job with the facial expressions. You really nailed the themes you were aiming for I feel. I think the dark colors and the background compliment the piece well.

Just amazing! You can see both their emotions in their expressions and eyes. The rigid yet soft look from the pastels gives the drawing a creepy mood.

Very good job! watched!

You captured his look of horror perfectly. The rough colors meeting the softer highlights emphizise how the emotions are displayed, giving off a dreaded mood.

All in all, it's a nicely done art pic.
