This might seem a silly question, but are there any special precautions to take when washing a drinking horn? I'm sure that sticking it in a dishwashing machine is out of the question but what about hand washing with detergent?

It's not a silly question at all! Hand washing is fine, use something very soft, like a dishcloth- horn scratches easily and if the inside is coated with wax, it can scrape off. Let it dry upside-down if you aren't already. It's also good to rub some vegetable oil on the outside every once in a while to keep the horn from cracking.
