And it worked - the elephant eventually walked around to get to the water

Lovely shot, as are the others! I have wonderful memories of Etosha. Whereabouts in the park is this?

Thanks  It was taken at Nembrownii water hole, I think - the last one I visited on the eastern half of the park before leaving that day, judging by the timestamp on the photo etc...  Near Okaukuejo?

I was a bit frustrated with the eastern side - quite a bit to see but so many people belting along over the speed limit, including lots of tour coaches.  The western side is now open to the public but not many people were there, so I went there on my 2nd day...

You're welcome!
Oh dear, seems like the tourism thing has hit Etosha. Unfortunately, the tour buses and lot of people will degrade the park, but glad to hear the western side was better!

I think I was unlucky (or daft) to be there (east) on a Saturday - maybe its ok on other days.  I did the western side on a Sunday and hardly saw another vehicle.  The roads aren't great on that side though

Could be that. Roads were never a big thing in Etosha, as I recall!

"Etosha: Place of Dry Water" The Etosha Pan documentary by Dave Hughes, won the very first "Golden Panda" award at "Wildscreen '82". A great film
And this is captures the feel of the place

This is such a great shot and really shows the perspective of the birds in relation to the size of the Elephant.
I remember reading in a John Berger Book about (Forest Tribes living in Africa) who when they were taken out of the Forest having lived all their lives, were showed the open plains and they could not distinguish between a bird and a Rhinoceros.
To them they were all just insects!
