You could always wear a kilt with a nice colorful tartan pattern... But yeah, I agree that tuxedos and business suits are boring. It kinda makes me miss the Napoleonic-era dress uniforms--at least they had nice lines and some color to them.

Yea, I've always wished that men had more fun clothes that were socially acceptable to wear. Β And male earrings are all boring too. Β Bah.

Kilts dude, thas where its at
I've worn a kilt at the Renaissance Festival a few times, some peoples reactions are classic. Gotta have the Scottish pride and self confidence to pull it off properly though. Plus having a claymore slung over your back helps keep certain individuals from taking their antics too far XD

Avolendi In reply to Andewfus [2015-03-30 09:38:41 +0000 UTC]
Whenever I read the word 'claymore' I want to add "this side towards enemy".
Which also works for the classical version, though which side the pointy end goes generally doesn't need an explanation ^^

loreshaper-kethal [2015-01-24 06:44:09 +0000 UTC]
I agree whole heartedly tom.
You probably already know this, but the clothing standards of today orginate primarily (but not exclusively) from victorian england, due to how that is where the industrial revolution started.
This is the time when dresses and Pantaloons (where the word pants comes from) were separated into exclusive catagories for mass production.
The men got the pantaloons because they were working in the factories with the big machines, so they needed tight clothing and short hair to prevent stuff from getting caught in the fast moving mechanisms.
The women got the dresses because that is what Queen Victora herself would wear, so people thought that because she was a royalty she should be an example for all the peasant and noble women to follow.
Before this time, clothing was gender ambiguous. Men and women wore tunics (like what Link from the legend of zelda wears, except usually not green because in those days dye was expensive)
The greeks often wore togas, Roman soldiers wore plate mail skirts, those same romans considered the psudo-pantaloon wearing Barbarian tribes like the Ostogoths and Visigoths to be primitive and savage.
Chinese and Japanese men wore long hair as a symbol of social status (often having servants make it look all fancy) along with their long groomed facial hair.
North american aboriginals wore smocks and animal hides and moccasins and Had long braided hair.
The scottish kilt is one of the few of these traditions to be continued in the modern age.
Quite frankly there are so many examples that I should stop here because the list would be so long it would take a whole page otherwise.
Weird huh? To be honest, anyone who does not really keep this in mind consistently annoy me greatly, because the best way to comprehend the present, is to know the past.
I guess even in a medival fantasy world stuff like this goes unoticed by the public at large.
