Description and sail away we did

Across the sea, we sailed far, a ship of fools, hunting hard. For the island we seek is lost to this realm. Yet with my map, and compass too, we'll the find isle and thing or two.

Beyond the last star and covered in stone, across the deep was a pirates home. A place of danger, where few ever dared, lies our treasure buried there....

And so we go, with an eager start to grab the treasure that captures our hearts....
and on to the next one [link]

[link]

Well we are sailing now, there is no turning back. The main flats are done and now i am tackling the shadows on this piece as well as the highlights on the other.... so here we go....

new update
I think i am all but done with this one- I might add tidbits here and there, but I am pretty pleased with the feel of this one.

old update
Well I am adding the shadows and other effects. I also worked the trees to more my liking and will continue to add highlights and such to there.

more to come on our trip

And what, pray tell, will we find there,
On yon island set with so grim an air?
But lead on captain, lead on!

I enjoy this series a lot.

And I'm not just making this up, am I, or seeing things, I mean? This island has definitely got a personality, and it is not a happy one. It's alive. *shudders*

I really like the way you've done the forest here, all bright and dark and shadowy, depending where you look. It's detailed, but in a background-ish sort of way. Very fitting.

The light from the back gives it this certain journey feeling and the rocks are awesome as always The one in the middle looks a bit suspicious, i would say.

This is coming along really well. The rolling sea and fiery volcano give a good sense of movement. The landscape could definitely be called "forbidding" with all those frowning rock formations. Very cool!!

I think this ties with The Hunt as my favorite drawings. Are you going to add in any sea gulls flying around the boat?
Is your back better now?

travisJhanson In reply to frozen208 [2009-04-30 15:05:19 +0000 UTC]

i don't know i have not yet decided about the gulls- (rats with wings)- maybe...

as for the back it is improving- yet i still have to be careful

I like how the faces looks slightly more angry in this one, fits so well with the overall mysterious atmosphere of the island

On a slightly more serious note... the trees in front seem a little too vague, I kinda feel like they should have individual outlines as well... they just don't sit right with me, anyways!

travisJhanson In reply to Dieman [2009-04-30 21:35:42 +0000 UTC]

and why does it have to be serious- remember what happened to the last guy who was "so serious" he found out about the pencil trick.

That's why I'm a bit of a rebel. One can never be a "boy who pulls someone's ears off" because such a task has a high probability of disaster. That's why I declined your offer to be an "enforcer/guy who dies in a battle right away because he has no personality".

I like the faces and how you did the tiers of the jungle. I know this isn’t finished yet but the volcano could use some reds I think. Do you plan to subtly highlight the faces at all? I think that would work really well, but it’s hard to really say at this stage.

you did a great job here.

just a small remark. the wind is blowing from left to right (according to the ship's sails and the smoke of the volcano) but the flag of the ship seems going against the wind. which could not possibly happen... ^_^

Grinning-Oni [2009-04-14 15:50:04 +0000 UTC]

I like the faces in the rocks.

I do feel you should be able to see more of the shoreline, like beach or cliffs rather than going straight into the trees.

Also I'm not entirely digging the trees in the midbackground that have been shadowed out, I think that's kind of an abbrupt transition and would suggest colouring them (and let the gradation in colour show the depth), rather than leaving them a black.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

travisJhanson In reply to Grinning-Oni [2009-04-14 19:58:40 +0000 UTC]

part of the problem is that I had not added the shadows on the trees to help the depth, I am adding that now, and I think it adds the depth you are talking about. though there is still much to do.

As for the trees in the back that are black I have some ideas on how I am planning on tackling them - I do not want them to be jet black but I do have some plans.

Thanks for the notes -

Wonderful atmosphere ... I like this! And I wonder how you colored the outlines of the clouds? In a special layer? Didn't get this trick ...

travisJhanson In reply to Asarea [2009-04-14 19:59:36 +0000 UTC]

they are worked on a another layer, usually the line art layer itself. I find working in several layers and treating colors as objects allows me to do all sorts of things
