Description Taken at The Wilds - Cumberland, OH. The Wilds is a wildlife conservation center that focuses on conservation of animals through scientific research and education and promotes the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle philosophy to conserve our world.

This is a baby White Rhionercos that was born just two weeks ago at The Wilds and is a fourth generation baby born to the group that are currently residing here. It was the cutest thing, romping and jumping around at a whim, then trotting after its mother when she got too far away.

These rhinos have a Conservation Status of Vulnerable due to excessive hunting along the Indo-Gangetic Plain so the efforts that The Wilds and other Zoos around the world to breed more animals is extremely important. While in these facilities we were allowed to actually touch and pet both their Indian and White rhinos, which was just an amazing experience. Getting to see, smell and touch these beautiful animals was beyond belief and I'm sure that I wasn't the only one firmly convinced that we have to do everything we can to protect these gentle giants.

Wow that's a great shot. It's Boo! I forget her real name... (something Swahili?) but she was born on or around Halloween so they just call her Boo. Or that's what they told us anyway... (oh, and it's a Southern White Rhino... the description says Indian... heheh) Look at how well she is growing! [link]

I wish we had stopped at the Rhinoceros barn... we only went to the Carnivore station. I guess the old male Indian Rhino was pretty ill.

Doh! I have so changed my description! And wow, she's getting big! Of course, they're supposed to but it's only been a few months! That's too bad about the male Indian, when we were there we got to see him and he was immense and so awesome and I think I got to touch him but he was feeling grumpy from the cold weather too.

Heheh I've made typos like that before...

That's really cool. I would have loved the chance to touch one of them! I hope he recovers alright...

I've always had a particular soft spot for rhinos... and you captured a very sweet side of these powerful, indomitable, noble beasts.

Love it.

I got the opportunity to feed Indian rhinos before. They're astonishing creatures, big, beautiful and impossibly lovable.

You brought back those warm, fuzzy feelings for me all over again.

Thanks! I knew when I shot these that I was going to have to convert to black and white because not only the lighting was horrid but they have all that wonderful texture. And getting to FEEL them was amazing too.
