Description Taken at the Indianapolis Zoo - Indianapolis, IN

These are the magnificent African elephants, a pair that had been hanging around one side of the enclosure. When I came upon them, they were raising their trunks to the air though I'm not sure why but it was rather enchanting to watch. I'm uncertain if these are male or female elephants as African elephants have tusks with both genders--and I didn't look under their "skirts" close enough.

Elephants are considered to be highly intelligent, on the same level of apes and dolphins--I recall hearing once listening to NPR that they found evidence that elephants are capable of mimicking as well, as some elephants in the wild would mimic the sound of trucks driving down the road. That cracked me up.

LOL This one got up to its knees a couple times but it was still a little chilly for that I think and he just stood there a few minutes before backing up. I'll be on a nice warm day they love it!
