Description a concept of what the Orcish homeland of Elder Scrolls lore would look like, for the possibly-now-defunct Orsinium Mod

this artwork may or may not have helped keep momentum going for the project months ago when i started painting it -- unfortunately nobody on board the mod is so prompt pro bono -- but i thought Elder Scrolls fans might still like it.

elf-who-knows-me-well asked "why do you always paint mountains with holes in them?" good question

I really like this design for Orsinium, especially for one nestled in the mountains between Skyrim and Hammerfell. It evokes something akin to the fortress of Masada, not just impregnable, but completely, utterly unapproachable.

The texture of the rock is beautiful, and those colors are subtle but so gorgeous!

Man, I hope they were able to find the schematics for a Dwemer elevator, because if they couldn't that is one hell of a walk... climb.

Too bad your Orsinium mod went under. After seeing this I would have been more then willing to lend my time and talent, what little I possess lol.

Ahhh, so atmospheric and pretty.
So monsters can fly through, that's why!

Some really nice shapes here. The only problem I see with the hole is that you're at risk of getting a rather slim piece of rock at where the city is sitting. Other than that, I think it's aesthetically pleasant and even helps the compo (sition).

yes, loadbearing might be an issue with that hole, but i envisaged the mesa to be somewhat wedge-shaped so under the city it'd be a bit thicker
if the mod ever shows signs of life i'd love to paint this same site a couple more times from different angles for the terrain modelers.

Oooh... this is beautiful... The mist giving way to the verdure is gorgeous and a really good use of color, and that tower, or ruin, in the central mountain blends in so well, but when you notice it, it gives a sense of earthen elegance that adds much more to the sweeping epic landscape of Orsinium. This is an amazing concept of Orsinium. And the contrast between the clouds and the light, with the mountain fortress leaning toward the storm clouds and away from the light, makes you think how brutal orcish life must be, even amid the beautiful landscape. Very subtle, but awesome, especially with the dark foreground.

seriously, thanks for the ovation, it really validates a lot of the goals i set out to accomplish with this subject.

thanks, i feel it's cheating a bit to use PS gradients in layer modes after doing a couple hours of "real" painting in Corel, trying to keep the colors harmonized (and failing), resorting ultimately to filters, etc. i justify it on the grounds that i have a poor monitor... though i know of many artists better than me who regularly work on 13" laptop screens, so, yeah, it's just cheating. but digital is a demanding medium as far as results go so principles be damned.

Whatever it takes and whatever you feel comfortable with is all that matters. It looks great no matter what.

Hmm. If the landscape was like this it could explain why the Orcs dealt so much damage during the siege of Orsinium.
The towns would be hard to get to and those mountains could serve as archer posts to three or four guys at a time.

exactly what i was thinking -- i wanted to make the fortress-city and surrounding environment about as unassailable as possible... plus i always thought that while Skyrim's landscape was grand it could have included more epic, dramatic geological spectacles. reading the Lore you get a pretty fantastic vision of the other provinces [A Dance in Fire!] and the only one that's been rendered in the games so far as approximately fantastical as in the stories was, in my opinion, Morrowind.

I always thought these two provinces to have the same ore, maybe wildlife, you know, because they both have environments only the strongest can survive in. And let's be serious here, Orcs and Dunmer are both the best suited race for survival in their area. Orcs = High Rock, Skyrim, Cyrodil, Orisium. Dunmer = Morrowind, Summerset Isles, Valenwood.
