This drawing is a gift for a friend with scoliosis who is having surgery in a few hours as of posting. Please pray for her.
Princess Eugenie is a member of the British Royal family. To be honest, although I know of her mother, Sarah Ferguson/Fergie, I hadn't heard of the Princess Eugenie until this weekend, when someone mentioned to me that she wore a wedding dress that revealed her scoliosis scar.
I was deeply inspired by the idea of a Princess who has suffered and lived to tell the tale and who is beautiful with her past scars and I thought of my friend, who is also very brave, who, despite her suffering, does so much for her family and maintains such strong faith and insanely efficient and honest work ethic, all while being kind and friendly, always thinking of others before herself. I mentioned Princess Eugenie to my friend, and she told me she knows of her and finds her inspirational, so I drew the picture. I don't know anything about Princess Eugenie as a person and don't want to say anything inaccurate or misjudge her and her intentions, nor do I want to use her likeness to make my own sociopolitical or philosophical statement - I respect her humanity and individuality too much to use her for my own agenda - but having gone through that sort of suffering and having a happily-ever-after - love with her husband, her sister Beatrice and the rest of her family - is inspiring to all of us currently struggling.
I am also in love with the wedding dress design by Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos. The material was very difficult to draw and I opted to leave out the pattern because then the drawing might be too busy, but the pattern is beautiful too. The material is still in places and bent in others, and I used two main reference photos, one in which the dress was less worn and wrinkled, as it had probably been taken earlier in the day.
I gave the dress a creamy tint to make it look more lived-in, as the various photos indicated the dress wrinkled and folded as the night progressed, which wasn't visible in some of the photos. It was a white dress that reflected back whatever light was present, sometimes blue-greyish, sometimes creamy.
I don't usually draw scars, so choosing the tint was challenging, I wanted it to be visible but I didn't want it to look fresh, as she had the surgery as a child.
I chose the blue background because the sky was blue on that day and because in my mind, I associate it as a heavenly sort of color that I think suits a wedding (well, the saying goes "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue")
I had a lot of fun drawing and painting a royal bride. There is something fun and dreamy about drawing princesses and brides.
