I decided to try the Mermay/Mermaid May challenge. Here's the Warsaw Mermaid (Syrenka Warszawska). She's on the coat of arms of Warsaw, Poland's capital. There are many statues of her in the city, this one is inspired by the statue near the Vistula River (Wisła) inspired by a legend about a mermaid who protects Warsaw. There are various versions of the legend, but most of them state she got caught in a net and freed by a resident of Warsaw and, from that time on, she protected the city. Some legends say she's the Little Mermaid's sister (or at least so says Wikipedia), I haven't heard this version myself, but its lovely. Obviously, it was not part of the original legend but became part of it after the Copenhagen statue of Hans Christen Andersen's mermaid was built.
