Happy Women's History Month and International Women's Day!

I'm passionate about women's history and have always wanted to express my faith through my art, but haven't felt talented enough to approach the subject with the dignity it deserves in the past. Partially inspired by and partially because I was asked to draw Saint Nicolas by the Polish school while at the same time creating Daisy Coloring Book 2 partially for my parents to be able to use to entertain children at a Polish Catholic couple's retreat, I've started drawing Saints before last Christmas and have gained confidence through doing so.

I've also been in a super stereotypically "girly" mood as of late, and really wanted to draw a princess, so the first female saint I've drawn is Święta Jadwiga (Saint Hedwig in English).

She held the title of King for a period of time and married the pagan Władysław Jagiełło, who converted to Catholicism in order to marry her.

She ruled during Poland's conflict with the Teutonic Knights, which you guys can read about in Henryk Sienkiewicz's book Krzyżacy which has an English translation that you can read here, as its in public domain:

www.fulltextarchive.com/page/T…

I do know her story, but I tend to recount historical events in a jumbled mess of a wrong order, so I propose you guys visit Wiki for more information on Saint Hedwig:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jadwiga_…

She's a very inspiring and beautiful woman.

Because she lived in Wawel Castle in Kraków/Cracow, I drew Zalipie-inspired folk art at the bottom picture (Zalipie is a Polish village on the outskirts of Kraków known for its painted houses)
Because traditionally women were usually the ones who decorated houses, sewed, knitted and made lace (of course there were exceptions; there are many past and present male folk artists whose work is beautiful), I associate folk art with women's history.

The Eagle on her dress is the symbol of Poland and the red and white watercolor background is meant to represent the Polish flag.

One of my characters, Zorard's sister Hedwig, is named after her.

Oh cool! I was planning on making an icon of her as well! I like that you went with the Polish flag color scheme of red and white with the Polish eagle.
