The good thing in practicing art is that it happens every time when doing anything, without even meaning to practice.

Forever practicing. Yes. The funny thing is, after a time, the things seems to go out alone as you want. Even the difficult things (my experience).
The first sketch reminds me a hypogriff, I don't know why.
And the last sketch of datyle is beautiful. One question: will you put again the the description of your self-conscious species again?

I have a plan to revamp whole darn sheet and put up enough information that some people would run away rather than staying and read it all. Things have changed...

Art is hard. Improvement is hard. Some people is faster, other people is slower, but in the end everybody improve in one way or another.
I love that awesome wing and tail growth |D.

It's funny how the tail is basically the same, slightly raptor-like, in the very beginning and that is also what it's now. But I lost the idea there between. |D

WOW!!! Maybe I should do this. (Not in a specific character, but I have really old pictures from 1996) From when I was 5 all the way till now. It's really remarkable!!

Am I the only one here who thinks 2005 is better than 3003? *lol* To be honest I'd bet there was a Digimon inspiration (or rather said: You started to learn how tod raw digital monsters so you used the same anatomy on your original creatures) at least that bulky body seems rather familiar. I don't even dislike it BUT it clearly has nothing to do with your imagination... if you wanted to have a slender athletic bird, haha x>
The new version looks more matured than the 2009 one x> I also like the new leg-anatomy better. (And the tail, of course. What was the purpose of the old one after all? :< ) I guess I'll just always prefer your old wings, realistic or not *Derp* But that's a big taste thing, too. Since you seem to aim for getting more and more into a "realism style" (design wise) for your creatures it surely is nice that you start to do more realistic wings, too.
A little question: Does your planet, too, have a lower gravity? (Mine has, so those wings would (maybe) even work there) I was just curious for imagination-reasons and such. Because I'm never sure when you use the "the world has its own laws/it simply is like that/it has magical influence"-style on your creations and when it is the "this is realistic"-one. (I usually don't care about realism in a clear fantasy-world but you are sometimes quiet confusing by suddenly changing designs to make them "realistic and actually working". Sooo that's why I dare to ask gravity here too, as I THINK they might go with the realism-way... and then this would be an option and mean, that most characters could jump higher etc. (Which might be nice to know for pictures etc. too)
That pose and spear and overall athletic look kinda has some "angel"-alike feeling. (Maybe because of their bright colors, too) They suddenly seem a LOT more aesthetic than before. I know they aren't warriors, but they'd be quiet cool with light shiny armors guarding shiny gates |'D
I love the idea that you'll link this to anybody who asks "how did you become this good?!". Unfortunately most artists delete their own old pictures so that people, who look into the galleries have no chances to see developments and tend to think those artists never started with "bad drawings" as everybody else. I found it very motivating to start with drawing when I saw how "bad" some of the best artists once had been. Simply because it shows that time and practice can pay off. Soooo timelines like this one are really great x> And it is always interesting to see how a concept might have developed (Like MoA changed from year to year, for example).

I dunno, let's see after a thousand years.
(I had to. |'D) Back to 2005 I thought that one was better, of course, but I now see 2003 -version as better. (Don't forget pokΓ©mons who also gave a big influence to things in the beginning.)
Datyles are supposed to be biological beings after all so I *try* make their feathers and wings more realistic. Then there are things like uncreated and postcreateds. Feathers for flying, what is that?
Real gravity is somewhat the same. Except there are creatures who can fly only because a) it's magiccc (just ask from any hellgriff) b) they have their own gravitation law (some postcreateds, don't ask how, just that it IS).
Maybe they learn to make VERY light-weight armors. B>
I must submit more, even older stuff I guess. If not else, then to cheer people a bit. |D

I don't really understand what you mean by the pig eye syndrome and at first I didn't realise what was wrong with the anatomy of the first 2(seemed quite good to me) but when I read the description then I realized that you had not meant for them to be big and bulky but graceful and slender.

Big, not pig.
For the second... That is not explainable before you have lived through it too.

"finally starting to look like something I wanted already nine and a half years ago"
THIS IS THE MOMENT EVERY ARTIST LIVES FOR. Tons of 'grats to ya! Now if only I could have this kind of luck...
You are right, though, in that practice is the only way to improve. Inborn skill and patience for art also help, as well as schooling if you're one of those "truly artsy" folks. Haha!
Onto the datyles, awesome job with the improvement! You did an excellent job hacking, toning, and refining them and the final picture there is simply stunning. Those wings! The lithe legs as they grip the spear! They're definitely at their best.
What I like about their current design is how they stand out from the other species. You took my "silhouette rule" advice very well, and you can see how they're lean and lithe-- unlike the others in the world. Looking back at the older designs, their bodies are reminiscent of the others (especially that second pic yeesh). But now they're unique and the design speaks, and that's good. Bravo, bravo!!
(Do datyles canonically wield spears often? As stuffy and intellectual as they are, I'd imagine their weapons of choice would be BOOKS or TRAPS. Hehe, I guess everybody needs an armed guard or two)

WAITING? I CAN'T WAIT. I have zero patience for this thing you guys call "art".
...ah fishing! Well that makes much more sense, then. The datyles, with their fragility and soft culture, don't strike me as the type of people who would pick up a spear and charge into battle. :'D

Maybe yes. Kind of.

Discord is a bit too mixed to be just a dragon horse, even if that seems to be more or less official. A chimera or something would be better.
