Description Another version of the wolf painting. I went a little bit crazier with this one; one of the benefits of doing multiple versions, I guess.

Photo used for reference.

I was just browsing around dA and spotted this; had to take a closer look. The colors are absolutely amazing.

Watercolor seems like such a tricky thing to me, it generally seems to look either really good or really bad. XD This is great, though. I can't stop looking at it; it's so pretty. c:

Thank you! And yeah, I agree with you about watercolor. It's definitely the most tempermental media I've come across so far.

Reminds me of silk paintings, actually.

This came out wonderful. I love how intense your variety and depth of the mixed colors became. Great!

How did you make that amazing snowflake pattern?

Sunhorde In reply to KoontzPhotography [2007-12-14 04:01:42 +0000 UTC]

While the background was still wet, I sprinkled table salt on it. The salt sucks up the moisture around it, leaving patterns once the paint is dry.

Thanks. I scrolled down and read your reply to somebody else. It's just amazing that you got such an amazing snowflake pattern out of the salt. When I use salt, it just looks like random spots

You hit it on this one. Those rich deep blues against the wolf's head and his/her's tinges of burnt sienna(?) really frame the focus. Beautiful use of watercolor transparency and white space.

Thanks, man! Yeah, it's burnt sienna, one of my favorite colors to use.

Wow, I love the way you reflected the sky on the wolf's fur... and your watercolours in general are pretty great. I've only ever done 1 watercolour and it doesn't compare.

It's all practice, man. Trust me, I still churn out sucktastic watercolors every day. I just make sure no one sees them.

Thanks for the comment!

Lovely work did you use rock salt to make the snow? My best to you and yours!

Table salt, so the snow would look more delicate.

I really like these two wolf paintings, though this one's got a lot more zing to it courtesy of the stronger colours and saturated oranges. The patterns in the background add a lot of interest too, can I ask how you made them? I can never fathom watercolours.

I used wet-on-wet for the background (brushed plain water across the entire background, then went over it again with paint while it was still wet), and while it was still wet sprinkled salt over it. The salt soaks up the moisture, leaving those pretty patterns.

Thanks for the comment!
