what stands out most to me in this photo is the composition. the grass in the foregrond is great. the tree is beautiful and everything about this photo seems to fit in place well. the gradient adds a subtle touch. its quite a nice photo.

hehe, all that and only a "quite nice"?

Thanks for the great comment, it's always heart-warming to see people care enough to reason out exactly why they like a shot

ok time to nitpick here as requested...

erm...

i'll break it into the most important first... the "meanning"
of the image is softend by unclear focus.

i figure the simple way to interpret it is by imagining
the kid as the main object while his dad is leaving him
slowly and the world ["tree"] is threatning/interesting-for him.

so... more focus on the kid, i think everything is value subjective
so you should darken both grass levels sorrounding the kid [some],
select his head manually and stretch the "levels" histogram some and then
apply a soft "s" shape in the curves tool for higher contrast there
then you should maybe increase the selection a tad and soften it's edges
and apply some unsharp masking beyond any other sharpening
you think of using... which leads me to my next thought...

i think the close grass is sharper than the kid n' dad...

-- i just jumped back here after finishing the paragraph about lens blur...

erase the white spot on the grass below the dad.. probably should erase
the other one too.

maybe also the tree next to the dad's head... maybe.
or you can just adjust the levels on him.

--

everything is again in relation to each other... so it's ok if you soften
them up a tad.. don't use gaussian blur[!], select them roughly
then make a mask [for a lens blur] where the selection is black and
soften the black with a strong gaussian blur.. it's not the way it would
be in real life but it will work wornders for the image... save that mask
in the channels pallette and apply the lens blur with that mask, distanse
set to "0" [i think... otherwise reverse it], no curvature on the shape
and personally i like the 5/6 [forgot word - like pentagon and the other
one] for "sunnier" and 8 [what is that damn word? - for the border split]
for "softer" .. then choose your radius for how much blur you want
and insert a mild amount of monochrome noise for a realisting feel.

last thing....
the sheer hight of the tree is just so strong that it takes all eyes on it.
perhaps a slight cropping of the top.. maybe also from the bottom.

well... hope you've seen something new with my pik

oh yeah... gotta give at least a good note here and there...

i love the fact that you actually have a consept to work with
and the layout is pretty much close to perfect considering you
kept it as is.

it's a tad a shame how little detayl these digi-cams get out of
shades .. .. but i figure your exposure [at least in the fixed image]
looks excellent to me.

on the side note...
i remember when i just learned the sharpen tool... i would sharpen
everything without thinking... like the tree bark.... what for idiot?!
[just laughing at myself there]

cheese why the tease ???

Wow that's really pretty.
Did you take it from the bunker by the 2nd tee at Seacroft golf course??

I took it from Drummond Road, god knows which bit of the course it was, they won't let me in... lol

im not going to analyze this here because i know for a fact you can out-analyze me any day and therefor have probably thought of everything i would be saying in such an analysis.

but i will say:

"ahh, hmmm, yes."

and leave it at that.

Thank you

Not at all, sir - you see, I have abouit a 2 hour time limit to look at all my photos before I hate them, so I never get the chance to analyse my own. I've realised I treat my own photos very differently to the photos I see, especially when I'm picking which ones to submit.

Plus, as you said, it's always interesting to see what other people think

hahaha but a very nice shot, i love how overpowering that tree appears

Only if I was following them, I just happened to bike past on my way to a sunset

I had been aiming for slightly earlier, when they were more in the frame, but I think this ended up being the perfect moment, with the kid looking up at the tree. Further proof that things always work out for the best.

Looky looky!

Pimpin that black and white verve pretty hardcore man, even got the gradiant. Slick capture, quiet, great mood, lighting is excellent, its a damn fine photo.
Foreground is win.

I can't help the black & white, everytime I look at a photo of mine I wanna see it in monochrome but sod it, if it means I'll like my gallery, I'll do it.

Gradient had to be put in later, cos that bit of sky was dead flat otherwise, Photoshop is indeed my pimp.
