this looks really IR. Perfect clouds that day for photos. the composition in this one doesn't seem quite as strong as the last photo i commented on of yours. I'm not sure but maybe it's the ratio between the sky and ground that makes it less eye popping. or it could be lack of something speicifically in the foreground.

i see how it would be very easy to forget, becaues the rest of the photo is quite eyecatching.

I'd never really considered it, but now you mention it, there is a lack of foreground to give it some scale, as well as an easy resting point for the eye... the movement was the chief thing I was trying to capture here, but I suppose I got so wrapped up in that I forgot that the eye needs to stop moving sometimes

nice composition, but i would reduce the noise.

well, thats very true. i like that you did this not randomly, but you wanted it that way.

I think noise often comes down to personal preference - some people like their images smooth and perfect, but to me that comes across as false, artificial, removed from reality. I enjoy a bit of texture in a shot.

Still, I'd prefer film grain to digital noise anyday...

you cought the wind... and that's very good.
you got it square... and that's good too: it's a powerful cut.

Now... I'm not sure about BW, I mean it is original but I just dont know... I really think the colors of this shot were very nice...

I guess I'm just bored of seeing beach shots in colour, I see them all the time and B/W just allows me to have more contrast and really bring out the sand blowing across.

Thanks for the compliments tho bro, and especially the fav

asome awsome awsome, thinkin you prolly used a tripod for this one but i had to wonder, how did you get your sky so dark! besidessss with photoshop, uit already had to be pretty damned grey for that..blah anyways +fav

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sonofsanta In reply to jallen [2005-07-07 09:17:54 +0000 UTC]

I can't really remember now (the shots themselves are about a month and a half old), but I don't think I used a tripod - the exposures are 1/480 and 1/750, according to the EXIF, so it's feasible that I didn't.

That's partly how it's darkened, as well - because it's two shots, the shot of the sky was a faster exposure, and slightly darker. That's faded in with a graded layer mask, then there's a Levels layer with a gradient to it's mask as well.
The Unsharp Mask at radius 250, strength 80% probably darkened it down a lot as well, it ups the contrast.

So mostly Photoshop but the shot of the sky was darker originally. Still, a red filter would have been nicer still.

I love this shot, everything really does seem to be flowing toward the sea! you have some awesome value range here, and the fact that the clouds hide the gradual value change in the sky (as you move from the top of the picture to the horizon) really adds drama to this shot! super use of high contrast!

High contrast B&W is where it's at

Big thanks on the +fav, but damn you for beating me to the comments I've got 4 of your shots bookmarked from a couple of days ago when I started commenting on them... lol

Oh.... my... FUCK

THAT'S INCREDIBLE! This seriously has to be one of the best photos I've ever seen from you Matt, it's just... WOW

it really works in black and white because the contrast between the clouds and the sky is fantastic

so much depth in this.... I can't help but say

You continue to astound me

I know it must be good, because I kinda like it too. Unusual, huh?

B&W was perhaps inevitable for this shot, given that it's me, but I'm bored of colour shots of the beach anyway

Dude, I've got deviations from a year ago from some people I'm slacking.

I used the Lab Mode method for this one ([link] ) but I tend to pick between the two for each shot I do, sometimes the dual H/S gives you better control over colours and stuff, and sometimes Lab gives you better detail. The contrast is brought out by using an Unsharp Mask at maximum radius, about 80% or so, which is then set to soft light and taken down to about 80% opacity, just to let some of the details back through.

The original (2000x2000) is 75mb tho, so I can either send it to you next time I see you on MSN, e-mail it to you with YouSendIt or shrink it down to a smaller size for you to just play with... which one do you fancy?
