Description the infamous Springfield sniper rifle, for a game I worked on several years ago, 'Call of Cthulhu- dark corners of the Earth'

Interestingly this gun has a colorful history since it was plagiarized off a German Mauser (I think, have to double check) design, so after the 2nd world war the American army had to pay damages to the Mauser company because of that.

I also modelled and textured a bayonette and scope that fits this gun but was removed for memory reasons

Was the bayonet intended to use during the game development?
It could be a real good thing, adding some more utility to this weapon, other than long range combat and avoiding the neeed of switching to shotgun if things getting worse

yes, orginially we intended that, but was a bit too complicated when it came to implementing it.

You are correct...It was based off a mauser 98 action, which is the most copied bolt action ever..I feel the 8mm round to be more effective the the 30-06 however they are very close

yeah the Mauser 98 is probably one of the most efficient weapons ever made in terms of production cost and longevity etc. On thing you can say about those evil Nazi's they made damn good weapons.

you are lucky, you can legally do that in the states, here in the UK you can't own guns.

Have you tried some sharp shooting with it? it is supposedly quite accurate, and some people are wizards with the bolt-action and can do it at unbelievable speeds, like sleight of hand.

long range is were this rifle performs well...I hit a a target at over 150 yards open site...about a 3 inch group....open site...I just love it....you can't own guns at all in the UK?
France still allows some from what I hear, but you can't own war caliber's, 9mm 45 acp ect....stupid laws

I envy you
Back in South Africa we could also own guns, although there it is really part of the problem we have in terms of violent crime.

So...In the UK you can't own any guns whatso ever? no shotguns?
There sure has been a rash of gun related crimes lately in the states and I don't care for that at all....I just want to be able to shoot back if some block is shooting at me....the bastards always seem to shoot at unarmed people....

many years ago 15 or so a guy walked into a Madonald's with a glock with 17 rounds and started to shoot...he shot one person and got off two rounds.....a retired cop shot him with a 38 right in the head...lives were saved that day...

What's your favorite german weapon of ww2?? my has to be the MG-42.........We made movie's to prepare our troops just for that weapon......wicked...Hitler's buss saw they called it..

I think having guns in case you get attacked by guns pans out one in 100 times, trust me I know of only one person that had a gun when they were hijacked that lived,(and that guy was one of the most highly trained military special forces in South Africa, the Rekkies) the problem being that the criminals have their guns ready and pointed at you, whereas a gun on your person is just too damn difficult to get to while a gun is pointed at you, the macdonalds cop was lucky, they probably had to look over a large amount of people and didn't focus their attention on him at the time he got to his gun, luck! Nope the situation here in england is actually OK, except here you get more knife crime, but the odds are much better for surviving a knife attack, at the very least you can block and take damage in an arm where it is not lethal. People still die, but much less than in some places in the world.

yeah and the mc donalds guy was a special forces vet befor ebeing a cop so he had massive training and was very lucky to boot..I happen to agree with you a 100 percent..I am a martial artist and criminals don't see that like they would if your going for your gun or have a gun...element of surprise is always good.....
Would you believe it hard to get ammo right now...it never has been...but people think Obama is going to ban all guns...he's not but he sure wants to put a end to these gun shows loops holes where crazys get there guns and also put a ban on assault weapons like we had under clinton...this I support tho...

The problem with gun control is choosing the sane from the unstable, you can never know which sane person just loses his cool next, and having weapons to protect from weapons just increases that risk exponentially, since paranoia inspires some of those wanting to protect themselves from weapons, paranoia is also the first symptom of those detaching from reality. vicious cycle.

it led to some technical problems with stealth campers being able to clear a path too easily,-the scope I mean.

the bayonetter was used for a time as an alternative 'knife' but on the rifle required too many animations.
