Thanks! I posted the step-by-step details on the Superhero Costuming Forum, here they are for you.
Construction details:
PVC pipe in three different diameters 1" 3/4" and 1/2"
PVC sheet 6mm thick
I cut the sheet to resemble the points on the trident, 1 big, 2 medium, and 2 of the hooky ones, also to flat pieces for connecting the medium pipe to the main staff.
The pipes were cut to length for the top piece. Then the ends were quartered off and triangle shaped segments were removed, two from each pipe. Using a heat gun the ends were then molded together and the points were glued in place with gorilla glue.
Small sections of the smallest pipe were cut at an angle to define the distance between each tine, then glued in place. The ends of the medium pipe were heat molded to fit the flat pieces and a slit was made in the main shaft, also glued in place. The glue holds well enough for the next steps but is not strong enough on it's own. All joints, excluding the points, were then fiberglassed to add strength. Then bondo-ed for smoothness.
I found that the spot filler bondo works really well to get those few pesky defects. For the most part the bondo stuck to the pvc, however, at the tips of the points it became a little loose because the points can flex and the bondo does not flex with it. It's not perfect but turned out great. Next, was a couple coats of plastic primer paint and some more sanding.
Finally the finished paint job!
Using GreenArrow (Brian's) excellent advice, that's autotrim for the detail ridges. The 2 foot extension is stabilized by using the medium pipe inside the main pipe and a few screws to secure it all in place.
