Description Yeah, this has nothing at all to do with that film franchise.. I'm just following on from the title of yesterday's deviation. [link] I dunno.. flies probably can't even get up this high!

Anyway, this is a bird's eye view of the expansion of the model I made a couple of years ago of central London. [link]

The model now stretches from Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace in the west all the way over to the Excel Centre and beyond in the east.

The central area includes a few buildings that are planned for the near future, although thanks to the whole credit thing a few of them are now delayed or on the verge of being canceled.

At the time of the original modeling this was reflecting London as it was expected to look in 2011. It’s hard to say how far off this vision is now. Bit of a shame, but at least the most exciting buildings look like they'll still be built. We'll just have to do without the mobile phone and the boomerang, and make do with a slightly smaller cheese grater.

I'm wondering, did you use an atlas for the street plan? I've been pondering a city project myself, but the logistics of it are a little daunting. Very nice work so far by the way, a real show of patience.

I think however you do it it'll be daunting and frustrating at times, but the end result is definitely rewarding.

To answer your question, for most of the model I took screenshots from Google Earth and 'traced' over them, making a spline for each building and then extruding it. But the landmarks like Tower Bridge, etc, are box modeled, based on further reference photos, since they needed to be of a higher quality.

Yep, no magic button for art. Thanks for the tips.

No problemo - hope you have fun with your city project, if you do go through with it.

Beautiful detail If you ever go that far I am sure the texturing would be a bear on this one

Hmm. A lot of people are suggesting I texture it... maybe I'll give it a go. I don't think it'd be very difficult to do, it'd just take a very long time.

Hmmm no it would not be hard per se, just very very time consuming. That is a lot of faces

How long did it take you?

Thanks! I think it took 2-3 weeks in all. I went a bit nuts by the end of it but it was a lot of fun.
