dat area-denial weapon ^_^
The tripid design reminds me of this old NES game... Metalmech, i think it was called, where the player character is a police(?) mech pilot, piloting a three-legged robot. Instead of having all three legs splayed like that though, the one in game have the third leg between the other two, like if you were to walk your hand across the desk using your index, middle and ring fingers... perhaps im not explaining myself well...

some of the official variants have some really, really nasty loadouts. I'm having trouble finding official rules (some sites say they haven't been published yet?)
one of the variants is a close range loadout, which seems to me to be a waste of what could be a huge long-range defensive blocker. if nothing else, the core small lasers SRMs and med lasers should cover the knife-fighting range, more than that and you're gimping yourself, unless you're deploying in urban areas. Β
I figure you should never field anything that big without some lighter/faster mechs to support it, anyway.

I think between Field Manual 3145 and TRO 3145 all the rules for tripods are covered. A lot of the variants carry shorter ranged weapons, and very few have long ranged weapons. The ability of the tripods to turn any amount for a single MP is most valuable in cities, so the cramped fighting works well with their short range loadouts.

how would you even deploy them, with such low move speed though, it seems like a long range-heavy loadout with some knife-fighting defense would be optimal, keeping them in a support role would be optimal.
ultimately it doesnt matter what I think, because they are equipped how they are equipped haha
still, I'd very much need my brown pants if I were to see one of those come up on my sensors in MWO. My swayback hunchy would be toast against most configs if the pilot was half-way worth his salt

I love the mass if this shot, and the maturity of the technology, the guy has THAT LAZER BEAM AND SUCH ALSO THE DETAIL OF THE SPIDER IT LOOKS LIKE I CAN LOOK INTO THE SPIDER.

I like how casual the punch looks, it just looks like the Ares tripod is completely unconcerned about the smaller mech

Some of that is my own shortcoming, though I did try a more dynamic pose that was declined. So it's really just static looking because I couldn't make it look like a proper swing.

I actually like the tripod design. It's elegant, stable for arty mechs, and works well in sniper mechs too. It's just not fast.

I would think quads are better for arty more area to spread the recoil effects against plus no speed penalty.

a tripod is actually more stable than a quad. Especially when you lock the legs.

By space limitations that is true, but by engineering limitations it may not be the case.

Though the rig upon which you place your camera isn't exactly good for recoil compensation. I've got a tripod for my camera also, for space savings it's great less room taken up in the bag is always a good thing.Β
But take a look at modern towed artillery,Β Β en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:M77β¦ the unit has four ground contact points.
Β Another case in reference can be found with the Arleigh Burke destroyer, it's got a tripod mast, but note that it's there just to hold equipment but lacks weapons mounts.Β a third case can be found hereΒ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USSβ¦
www.warboats.org/stonerordnoteβ¦
that's a 106mm recoilless which has a tripod stand, but only because of course it's not going to rock back and forth much during firing.
In short a mech is far more complicated, as the plustech walker by johndeer will prove for something intended to handle all terrain even numbers of legs however many esp if more then two gets you a rather stable platform. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2V8G⦠granted it's not a combat machine but it does have to cut down and take the limbs off trees so its noticeably load bearing in terrain that would be difficult by most standards.

This is awesome and I could never do anything like it but I have one complaint. . . kind of. It seems to obvious that lasers coming from the main 'stonewall' robot and the little guy down the bottom with the shouldered laser seem to be aligned to the same viewpoint. But thats just me being ultra picky. This is still awesome as shit

I'm not sure I understand what you mean as I don't see anything wrong with how I've placed/aimed the many lasers in the scene.

Well...
SPOILERS
We have Devlin Stone, and we have the Fortress, along with the Clarion Call and the actuall wall surrounding the inner Republic.
But Stone hasn't only military walls, per se, as the Republic was shaped around the ideals he embodied, ideals which keep the Republic going even after it was chopped down left and right by all neighbors, an ideological wall of sorts.
Oh, and then you have 135 tons of metal and weapons. That's a good wall too.
This is what I can remember right now, at least.
SPOILERS END
Or I might be completelly wrong and misread the whole thing. But then, it's BattleTech, few universes are this complex.

Haha, reading too deep I think, though "Devlin Stone" is the key phrase for this fan conspiracy. If you move around letters and spaces a bit you get the Devil in Stone (no one seems to notice my pitchfork). A lot think he's been a WoB plant all along, and you can see the Republic building mechs using Blake aesthetics. I haven't read all of FM3145 to update myself, but the fortress wall could come down only to have something much resemblingΒ a secondΒ WoB rush out.
