Description Here's the final piece I painted for the 3145 line of Battletech books, the print TRO cover.

A continuation of the scene on the Field Manual cover, the Republic's defense of the starport continues into the night as forces withdraw. A Clan Wolf Warwolf foolishly closes with an Ares tripod only to receive a punch that tears out it's side. Simian Battle Armor swarm the Warwolf to ensure it stays down. A Night Stalker medium mech rushes in to aid in holding the defensive line.

I think those Battle Armor are a bit too eager. I mean, the Mech is kinda falling over at the moment...

Why not wait for it to hit the ground, then murder the pilot?

And why are the BAs shooting red beams? The other pic seems to have them shooting blue. Unless I'm completely wrong in that these two are related:

I like the idea of a Tripod mech. more stability than bipedal, yet a bit more mobility than your Kodiak heavy mech. mind you Kodiak just looks absolutely dominating... great work as per usual.Β

The Ares is a Colossal Class Battle Mech, it's bigger than an atlas, it requires and extra leg to support it and keep it mobile, it requires 3 pilots to operate it too, and it the sight of itΒ inspires joy-joy feelings in me

Is the Ares a super-heavy battlemech?(100+tons) because I thought those were, like, crazy rare and crazy tough

Colossal Class, 130+ tons and requires 3 pilots

Just found it on Sarna 3 pilots and is classified as a collosal mech weighing between 125 and 135 tons. It is massive

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

storm-bunny [2013-10-06 09:40:02 +0000 UTC]

That looks like one massive mech ! Are there more tahn one cocpit on it? I like the image, but the value on the two mechs are the same, so it took me a couple of seconds to understand what was going on (that might be just me though ) Great work

psymonster1974 [2013-10-06 04:21:14 +0000 UTC]

I like mechs with more than two legs, seems like it would be a good way to disperse all that excessiveΒ ground pressure, but Battletech seemed to shy away from it, at least back in the days when I played. Not sure if it was a game mechanics thing or they didn't want comparisons to Imperial Walkers? Anyway, beautiful picture.

Quads simply operate under a set of rules that make them more unique rather than widespread. They're less well rounded, having specific advantages and distadvantages. These new tripods have mostly advantages, they just have to pay for the weight of that axtra leg.

I would have prefered to feature a more conventional mech myself, but there you go

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kantorock In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2013-10-04 21:27:04 +0000 UTC]

I can understand. The Ares is a rather unique 'mech, and you're about the only one (as far as I'm aware) to actually depict it outside the actual miniature, Β I can understand the challenge.
