This is page 9 of Doctor Who: Fade Away by my talented pal and collaborator Paul Hanley (story, colors, and lettering) and myself (pencils and inks). It is our (very fond) farewell to Nicholas Courtney. The final page. So now you all know what I've known since I first opened Paul's script a few months ago. It's a bit timey-wimey. s.This was easily one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had working in comics. So thanks, Paul for writing it and for never letting me be lazy about it. You're a gentleman and scholar.

I kinda figured...but was hoping for a happy ending.

Well, for Paul and I ...we were saying goodbye to a personal hero. When we first met we were talking about Classic Who and how much we liked the Brigadier stories. When Nick died it just kind of happened. Annnd...it is a bit of a happy ending. The Doctor finally says 'goodbye' to someone. Someone important to him. The Brig is correct. he could spend every day in their lives and have plenty to spare. He really did that in this story.

The BBC should be taking notes here. They homaged Elisabeth but not Nicholas. Inexcusable.

Absolutely. A lack of a dedictation to him at the beginning of the season (along with Lis, of course) was inexcusable. I'm hoping maybe they'll do something like deicate the finale or something to him later this year- but I kinda doubt they will. At least DWM has a massive tribute issue coming up.
Personally, the Brig is probably my single favorite character in DW- even more than the Doctor. My hope is that he'll live on now in comics, books, etc. In a story where the main character's a time traveller, we should never have to say goodbye to a great character for good.

There's been so much about this comic that I absolutely love that it's heartbreaking. The little details, especially on this page. The 'Have you seen this man?' caught my eye, as did several pictures with Sarah Jane, and the last one with the Brig, Eleven, Amy and... Doris?
I look forward to the next stories you and Paul Hanley do. Many kudos to both of you.
