Edit: A picture of the actor Jim Caviezel who played in The Passion of the Christ was used as a reference and inspiration.

Sweet! I've used charcoal pencil before unfortunately it wasn't to illustrate the Savior of mankind.

stunning image and really well thought out with the emphasis on the eye and the tear. I particularly like how you did the hair and the texture framing the image almost like he is emerging from something.. you know how you read a book/story and in your mind the images kind of imerge as you read.. reminds me of that.

Thank you so much for the myriad of comments and favorites! And the watch! I'm honored, for you're an amazing artist yourself. You've mastered the art of people's face, in my opinion. Thanks again!

ok, that's what I thought.... yeah, that's him. First person I thought of when I saw this, so thumbs up.
yeah... this would be prrretty much impossible to do without a reference, especially since it's so realistic, too. blue highlight-ishness in photoshop, or..?
PS. Totally unrelated to art.. have you seen the Nativity Story?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadowKorin In reply to zheregon [2006-12-07 05:37:21 +0000 UTC]

Actually that blue highlight is white charcoal. (that's kind of an oxymoron, isn't it?) I used charcoal pencils of varying hardnesses and a white pencil to get those thin streaks. The whitest highlights are just the paper that I left untouched.

I haven't seen that, though it sounds familiar....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zheregon In reply to ShadowKorin [2006-12-07 22:24:32 +0000 UTC]

cool.
I like the bluish effect, it's very nice, adds a sort of angelic glow, almost.
yeah, it's the movie about Jesus' birth, it looked like it was kind of in the same style as the Passion (although it's only PG, understandably).
hmm....sounds like more inspiration for you perhaps? XD...
PS. Ok, so this has been killing me. Please end my torment and tell me what happens once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in a thousand years?

I know about the let down. I was disappointed when I found out the answer. But, it kind of grew on me, especially with how cool the riddle sounds.

*hangs head* it's so true. I'm such a DA addict. My family says it's because I don't have a boyfriend. So I went looking for other people to ooh and ahh over me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zheregon In reply to ShadowKorin [2006-12-08 16:48:39 +0000 UTC]

aw come on, it ain't a bad thing! well... i mean... if it is, i'm with you all the way... on my way to being a hardcore DAaholic. XD

dude, that's the whole point of DA.. showing the results of our frequent and obsessive procrastination so others can ooh and ah over them, thus boosting our self esteem. XD ain't it true.

yeah.. it does kinda grow on you... i think it's kinda funny now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadowKorin In reply to zheregon [2006-12-08 23:15:34 +0000 UTC]

DA is both a self esteem booster and a humbler. The encouragement I get from people and the criticism is so beneficial but when I browse around and find artists who are far more accomplished than me, wow, the humility hits me majorly. But, it's awesome to see people's work, and read about their strategies and styles and grow as an artist myself. DA is pretty cool. I just wish there were more strict regulations on the porn stuff. I hate it when pornographic images (and most of the nudity and what-not that's posted up here is pretty porno in my opinion) are chosen for daily deviations and now by merely logging on I'm forced to look at them. That's extremely annoying.

zheregon In reply to ShadowKorin [2006-12-09 23:55:43 +0000 UTC]

It's true.. comments make you feel happy... then you browse around feel like your art's the crappiest... (of course, in your case, that's the farthest thing from the truth... )...
I know, that bothers me too about the nudity and such. I know there is such a thing as artistic nudity, but some people on DA take advantage of it just to put up... questionable stuff.... they should be more strict with the mature filter, or content in general. >.< sigh....
well, as spiderman's uncle said best "with great power comes great responsibility." If God gives you artistic talent, you shouldn't misuse it. unfortunately, many people do.

no worries mate
yeh, that classic quote is quite relevent for art...and Christian artists... well, all artists, really, I guess.
erm... I love how this has nothing to do with Man of Sorrows any longer.. should we be posting on your main site? Or should I just stop talking/typing? XD... i'm filling up your comment pages with pointless jabbering here, my bad.

zheregon [2006-12-06 05:38:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks... I felt like my words didn't quite come out the way my head was saying.. haha... happens a lot.. sometimes I hate the English language... yeah, I can see those emotions clearly, it's amazing how you managed to have a tense, dynamic combination of both contradicting feelings in his face at once.. now that is talent. What time frame are you thinking this happened? Is it in the garden of gathsemene, [which I can't spell]? That's how I thought of it, although I suppose it doesnt have to have a specific time frame, just a general piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadowKorin In reply to zheregon [2006-12-06 15:21:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's the Garden of Gethsemane. I orginally planned to color the tear red, but my family voted for a purely black and white picture, and I think I like that more than I would have that drop of color.

ShadowKorin In reply to zheregon [2006-12-07 05:01:17 +0000 UTC]

No, I'm not bothered at all!
Is he the actor who portrayed Jesus in The Passion? If that's the case, then yes I did.
Though, I changed it up a little to fit more what I wanted, but I usually rely pretty heavily on references to draw almost anything.
