Description This is a juvenile Cooper's Hawk (Adults are more of a slate grey and have red eyes.) drawn for the raptor bird contest of

I was orginally going to draw a gyrfalcon for this contest, but this paper caught my eye at the store (the background is not mine, I used scrapbook paper from a local shop) and it just wasn't asking for a white bird.
So, I tried a Harris' hawk, and an owl, but neither of those really worked. Finally I found this image of the Cooper's on Google (So, I obviously used a reference. Oh to be able to draw without one...) and decided that it was going to be him or nothing, due to the fact the contest was in three day when this was started.

I'm happy with how it came out, though I started strong and faded as I got down to the breast feathers. It's still one of my favorites I've done. Birds of prey do indeed have such an intensity that takes one's breath away.

She is simply gorgeous. Her feathers are light and delicate and I feel as thought I could feel them and they would be oh so soft.

I love this-the way you've picked out every single feather.

Also the eye- it makes the person viewing the picture almost seem to be looking into its soul.
This is going in my favorites for sure!

Thank you! I must tell you though, I didn't do the background of the paper. I drew the bird on scrapbook paper that already had that patten.

longwing [2006-12-03 12:07:59 +0000 UTC]

You really got the intesntiy there. Like the colours, the paper's a really good choice too. I don't think anyone can draw well without a reference. If they can, I haven't seen one. I like these kinds of pictures, where it fades out at the breast feathers. It's really...I don't know, atmospheric I guess.
Only constructive criticism I can offer is that there's a little too much slope from the forehead to the beak. Also, I don't know what it looks like in the photo, but the nostril isn't quite imbedded in the cere. But hey, those are only little pedantic things. Looks great.

Instant FAVORITE!
The eye is so piercing...
what technique is it made with?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadowKorin In reply to twinkletinker [2006-12-01 22:50:29 +0000 UTC]

the entire thing is done in colored pencil...I use a lot of layers to get the effects I like. Especially white to blend colors together.
