Description
A female grey seal 'flippers' (lightly rubs the pup's back with her fore flippers) her pup to try and encourage it to suckle. Mums only stay with their pups for 2 weeks before weaning them, so every minute of suckling counts if the pup is to survive.This shot has been used for the front cover of the April 2013 edition of the Journal of applied ecology! I love the way you highlight the special bond between mother and pup and her expression is so soft and gentle as she as a look at you

yes I like shots like this too, showing the behaviours of the animals especially mothers/pups which is what my research specialises in
