Description A mother grey seal with her pup on the north rona breeding colony

Please note, this photograph was taken from a hide during a routine survey of the breeding colony, please do not approach or disturb breeding seals with pups. Mothers will abandon pups if people come too close, and then the pups will starve to death.

Shame they don't keep that pretty white coat. But I guess it would make them easier to spot by predators hehe.

Awww. Looks like they are having a talk about their future and the pup assures the worried mother that it will be a healthy and playful little Weanie

Sweet couple. How far away from the coast do they go? A couple dozen meters? A couple hundred?

It depends on the female, most go at least far enough inland so the tide doesn't affect them (so like... 20metres ish from the shore?) but we've had females that pup right by the sea so every time the tide comes in the pup has to have a swim to higher ground [link] and we've also had females that not only travel far horizontally from the sea, but vertically!

This year on rona we had one female that climbed the hill up to where our main wooden hides are, this is a steep climb of almost 100 metres above sea level! She was a long way away from the sea...
