i did base the drawing off of his "red death" costume
shortly after the films climax he comes out into the ballroom wearing that piece of awesome, unfortunately the rest of the film he's in black and you can't see any details if they were there. :\

Yay Phantom! :] I love the movie's Red Death costume.
Most fanarts I've seen portray the Phantom as a more romantic figure. It's nice to see him more badass.

Well, I wanted to step away from the ordinary with it. One, from my ordinary which is never so dark, and two, from the portrayals i'd seen of the phantom, like you said, romantic. So I really wanted to show him more how he would've been feeling in that moment of the story, he felt betrayed and was seeking vengeance and resorted to angry threats and angry outbursts, but he still kept his cool most of that time because that was how he handled things, so it was much more of a dark cool anger. At least, that's how I feel about it.

I think its very lovely... in a dark kinda way. Yeah...
The textures are awesome, sir! I can't really give you advice on the "darkness" aspect... as I can't do that either. lol

For lighting and painting, just find a good reference. Red really grabs attention:

I'm not sure what kind of lighting you were looking for here, (daylight sneaking in from above? stage left theatre lighting?) but even subtle lighting on crimson will glow:

Personally, I think bold and dramatic chiaroscuro would fit his selfish and dramatic (dare I say bratty? oh no I didn't!) nature. I see it on his left knee and the bottom outline of his right.
The pose is delicious, he looks so dramatic and into his own performance. Notably the awesome finger action and the relaxed, but still guarded way he is holding his rapier (which also, is badass) Was his sword like that in the movie? Even if not, way cool! Embroidery, also well done. If you are going to go further with the render, get those tiny outlines and highlights on there! You want to show that shit off!
I think my favourite thing is the background, how it is kind of ambiguous and doesn't take away from Super Star at all. Props on the loose depiction of the chandler and "blood"; the texture brushes get on well with the composition. The masks are awesome, I'm only surprised that you didn't make a kodama face.
Brava, Brava, Braviiiiisima

the lighting i was looking for, the actual lighting itself, came out alright to me. The rendering was more my issue. Cuz now that I look back at it, I do rather like the color play, and if I were to change anything, it might be to bring out a little more red in the highlights. Also, chiaroscuro... yeah... i think i'm gonna have to go back and add that, cuz now that you say so... it just belongs there, at least in the shadows. I kinda think the highlights would look better smooth, as if the darkness is "creeping" over him XD. As for the highlights on the embroidery, i think they darkened when i added the textures... so I will go in and brighten them up, because yes I WANT TO FLAUNT THAT SHIT XD
*the break beat:
bratty comment=WIN. I was thinking of this a lot as I was drawing it all up.
His sword was definitely like that in the movie... but it's so damned hard to land a screencap of the actual hilt, and here's what i took reference from to conclude that, yes, it was a skull on there XD [link]
as for the masks, yeah... i didn't make a kodama, what's wrong with me? Though, i did make the daft punk masks! XD
Thanks so much for the well-thought comment and useful links! you are awesome!

Its an excellent piece and holds a lot of potential.
Now, critical: sorry..
You can actually be too dark, I think too much shadow has invaded the picture. He was a Villian in his own right, but only after everything was taken from him. His home was dark, but had splashes of light, lovely things from his past.. but they were often in corners or shadows, places he didn't have to look directly at.
His costume is wonderful and the salon of Masks is a wonderful touch, I love masks myself, just can draw one to save my butt.
So, thats my $1.50s worth, I hope it helps.

well, like I said, darkness isn't much my thing... but I still wanted to represent him from the point that he had reached when he donned the red death costume. He was at his darkest then, but that was always juxtaposed with the really upbeat masquerade ball, and it took me a while to realize that it's probably the darkest part of the play, at least, the point where he turns. He went from being sad and lonely, worthy of sympathy or empathy, and then he goes off because he doesn't get what he wants.
Though, true, I could lighten it up a bit, but the background is pretty damn cheesy by itself... so I don't want it too visible. decisions decisions.

the movie, the play, in my opinion they never get dark enough. I'd like to see the movie directed by Guillermo del Toro or Dave McKean instead. At least then it would really touch on the feel of his world. This is just me ranting though. Go watch the movie, tis good. XD

I agree I'd love to see a much darker version. Personally for me I'd love to see Ridley Scott do a dark version myself but, Guillermo Del Toro would also be very interesting.

oh wow! I totally love this! Like how U've drawn this costume!
This is a very unique vision of the POTO masquerade. Mean mostly these masks in the bacground... What more... The atmosphere! So dark! Just wonderfull! Definitely a fav!

thank you very much! I always thought that this part of the movie was a little too cheery. When the character the film revolves around turns dark, shouldn't there be a little more emphasis on that? Just my opinion. (not that the masqueraders were really involved... but it seemed to fun to resist!)
