Description The final colorized and fonted version of the sketch. The Phantom of the Opera makes an appearance as the ghastly Red Death from Edgar Allen Poe's famous horror story of pride conquered by the ultimate power of Death.

So a little detail into the rationale behind the costume design. With all due respect to Maria Bjornson and Alexandra Byrne, I never thought the Red Death costume had been executed just right in the ALW versions. The stage version always seemed a little - poofy and comical to me, and the stockings and high heels just had to go. The movie version, while elegant, lacked a certain presence without a real cloak or signature feathered hat. So I decided to once again try my hand at my own design on the character.

I restored the feathered hat to the character, and also a long cloak, which shows a little raggedness to emphasize the sense of decay. The golden details on the tunic are based loosely on 19th century military uniform designs (think of what Raoul wears to the ball) and are meant to resemble the exposed ribcage, along with glimpses of the femur and lower arm bones around the cuffs. Furthermore, the red chevrons beneath the ribs resemble muscle that has had the skin removed from it. I chose a full skull face mask - or is that Erik's face? I'm particularly proud of the cane - which is basically a dead Emperor, ironic since at this point the last Emperor of France, Napoleon III, is no longer in power after the revolution that took place as the Opera was being built. I felt that black riding boots would give the best sense of indimiation - something that the film's costume inspired.

Overall I had a really fun time coming up with all the details. Originally he was holding a sword but that ended up looking rather, as my friend DM said "Captain Phantom?". Ahhh - at least I can thank him for inspiring me to create the cane instead.

That being said, the original drawing was in No. 2 pencil on regular computer paper and was colored and words added in Photoshop 5.0.

Enjoy

Absolutely love your gorgeous interpretation of Erik's Red Death costume and all the well thought out details behind its conceptualization. Well done!

Hey! Would it be alright for me to try to make this an actual costume? I have a Masquerade coming up in a few months, and I'd love to wear this.

This is what I was hoping to see when I watched the 2004 film! Really, if you haven't read the book or seen the stage musical Erik could've been the Spanish Inquisition for all the viewer cared.

I love the meticulous details and the bright gaudiness of it all; in captures both how Erik wanted to stand out and at the same time "be like everyone else" (ie. in death everyone is equal). And I'm especially glad you threw in the infamous "Don't touch me!" lines. Something I wish Webber would've milked.

Splendid!

Why thank you! The costume used for Red Death in the film, by the by, is heavily based off of an actual outfit worn by Napoleon Bonaparte and can be see in this portrait of him: [link]

I would actually have been alright with it had he had a more billowing impressive cape, and of course, the requisite big feathery hat. Without those he looks considerably less intimidating (though not inelegant by any means).

Oo, thanks for the info bit.

Yes, it's the fact that he's missing the two trademark accessories that doesn't make the costume as impressive as it could be. When I thought of Erik wearing the Red Death getup in the novel I made it similar to the way pigeons and other birds puff themselves up to look bigger and more "intimidating". (Can you blame the guy for having a security/inferiority complex?)

I really like the drawing, but I don't really get what does it have to do with the Red Death, it's like, all the opposite, too... majestic I'd say, ghostly or not, it looks too full of health, and wealth, too! That's why it's always represented with just a bloodstained tunic, it's something decadent, completely despoiled of any material posession, in the tale everyone found disgusting how could a person choose a disguise like that one in times of plague.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to comment! Whilst I fully appreciate your feelings regarding that most worthy of Poe tales, I feel compelled to direct your attention to the fact that my rendition is not a direct reflection of that tale, but rather, an interpretation of how Erik, the Phantom of the Opera in Gaston Leroux's French horror classic novel, dressed when he attended the Opera's masquerade ball in the garb of the Red Death. By most accounts, he cut a very dramatic, extravagant figure, and it is from this interpretation, and not Poe's, that I have based the rich intricacy of my design. I do hope that this clears up some confusion and fear not, my respect for Poe's works runs deep and far be it from me to presume to have a superior view of what he wrote about.

Lol, to each their own. I still think it's too poofy, with all due respect to the incredibly talented Maria Bjornson (may she rest in peace).

absolutly awesome drawing i love your design of the suit but.... it were not Edgar allen poe who wrote the story i was a french guy called Gaston leroux. later adopted in another book version by Susan kay. I have no idea were you got Poe from, the story isn't iven his style. please change that, mistakes like that really bugs me sometimes.

MadameGiry In reply to silverDeer [2008-01-18 13:57:47 +0000 UTC]

Hey there. Thanks for the kind comments about my design.

I am fully aware that Gaston Leroux, and later Susan Kay, Sam Siciliano, and various others, are responsible for the creation/perpetuation of the Phantom of the Opera legend. However, it is common knowledge that Leroux had Erik, the Phantom, dress as the title character from Edgar Allen Poe's short story 'Masque of the Read Death' (see the Wikipedia article, the literary allusions includes Phantom: [link] ) for is ghoulish appearance at the Opera's Masquerade ball.

Thanks for trying to help though.
