WELL this is yet another things i have been meaning to get around to drawing.
I was super super fortunate and got my grubby mitts on a Donstrupper for my lady Carmen. So they needed to meet before they could kick butt together.
SO MEET OREO, the chonkyboi.

It had been something Carmen debated over for the last two months. Aether had hit a plateau with her training and Carmen was finding herself getting impatient to continue working on her own skills. Which was entirely unfair on the young mare, she was still very much a teenager and Carmen was not interested in over schooling her and ruining her work ethic. So she had stepped back the intensity of the work and upped the variety, hoping that some small jump work and more hacks would help the mares mental state.

But that meant she was now missing her show horse. Briar Mills had some astounding horses in the barns, but there were very few dressage riders and even fewer horses. Borrowing one that schooled at the level she wanted was not really an option at the moment. So she had looked at her finances, talked to her bosses and then begun to search around for a horse she could lease, or even buy.

There had been a few Thoroughbreds that were in her price range but they were not at the training level she wanted, and a very promising warmblood mare had then failed her vet check which had made her entirely unsuitable for the amount of money the owners had been asking for. It had felt like a very long few weeks as no horses seemed to meet her criteria. She had even begun to look internationally, despite the extra costs and headaches that would cause. It would be worth it for the right horse. And then one cold fall morning, the right horse had just fallen onto her desk.

Some of the boarders had been talking about another competition stable that had recently stormed into public awareness with their spotted horses. The Donstruppers were coloured and athletic in a variety of disciplines and while Carmen was much more interested in the more traditionally coloured horses, there was a gelding in the sales catalog that had the experience she was looking for. She was still not sold on him yet. He needed to pass numerous tests before she would let herself fall in love with him, but he was definitely one of the more promising horses she had seen in a while. He was a touch out of her price range, but the owners had listed him as negotiable, so if he suited she hoped she could work out a payment plan that suited.

It was all organised rather quickly for her to drive up and see him in person and she tried to stay calm and skeptical. Which was rather hard once she saw him. Orageux KXI, or Oreo as he was affectionately called by his owners, was a very friendly and personable horse. He was a gelding, which was a big selling point for Carmen given that she wanted a horse that was easy to house and work with. He had been training up to Prix St Georges which was where she was up to in her own experience. He had a bit of a belly, and it was explained that he was on a strict diet but had a tendency to putting on weight, which was another point for an easy keeping horse, but would mean Carmen had to be extra careful with his feed balancing.

Alexa, the woman that had taken on the task of helping her get acquainted, helped her get organised and they groomed and tacked him up for a test ride. He was a quirky horse and Carmen found herself greatly enjoying his antics as they got used to each other. Aether was generally well behaved and although she had her cheeky moments she had little patience for standing around, whereas Oreo had a more playful and humorous attitude that was rather endearing. The blossoming connection only strengthened when she got on him for their ride. He was light, fluid, and eager into the contact. She put him through the warm up, focusing on testing him out and schooling him as she would with Aether, and he lapped it up. His attention was entirely on what she asked, and he eagerly tried his heart out in the work with an honesty and focus that was refreshing after Aether's reluctance for the past few weeks.

The other woman's advice and opinions were also greatly helpful as Carmen also adjusted to the new horse. She knew she had her own weak spots that showed up far more on a horse this sensitive to cues, and the few issues they had were easily ruled as mostly her own faults that were causing confusion for the gelding. But overall she was delighted with his attitude and movement. The itch to keep playing around and working with him was hard to ignore but she knew he would need a cool down in this horrible cold weather, and so they relaxed and she got to see how he did on a short stroll around the property as a break after the work.

Oreo was definitely one of the most promising horses she had tried so far. Only the Mare that had failed the vet check had clicked as well after the first ride. Carmen felt awkward asking about payment options but luckily she was able to negotiate a payment plan with a lease to buy. She would need to be careful with her spending for a while longer, and maybe pick up more work hours, but it was manageable. This was all contingent on the gelding passing the vet check, something she was adamant about after the discovery of a bone chip in the mare. No matter how nice the horse, she did not want to buy anything that would be dealing with long term injuries and unable to do what she was wanting. She already had one project horse, this time she wanted one that allowed her to take her own riding to the next level.
