This was it.
If she managed to place this event, she would finally have enough to pay off the colt. It had been years of saving, years of planning and dreaming for the future, and it was strange to think that as soon as next week she could own the horse she had helped to breed, raise and now train. To say she was excited would be an understatement.
But it all hinged on the grey mare beneath her finishing well.
Rain had been a fantastic through the trip and during the warmups. For a green horse on her first big outing she had taken to it like a duck to water. There had been some drama, as usual with this mare, but nothing out of character or lasting. She had managed to get herself mucky in the stall again, something that had seemed impossible when they had bedded her down the night before after her bath, but she was a grey after all. If anyone could find a way to get dirty while in full rugs and with a thick bedding to sleep on, it would be her. But, despite the cold climate a quick clean had returned her to pristine looks. Something Harley always took pride in with her competition horses.
The biggest unknown was the surface. It was the first time they had really tried running her on snow, and although she had her shoe studs in, it was a worry to see how she would cope with such a different surface. Harley was trying not to get her hopes too far up. The important thing was to get the grey across the finish line with a positive learning experience. She was young, and despite placing twice at the few baby events they had tried at home, the mare was still very green with a long career ahead to aim for placings. Harley settled in the saddle and regathered her reins, preparing herself and tucking her chin inside the neck warmer she was wearing to combat the icy temperatures. She would have to see how the mare felt. The first few fences would help her to decide how to approach the entire run. If they were travelling well and Rain was taking the fences easily, then Harley thought she might try and get as close to the ideal time as possible. But if the mare was struggling, well she would see.
Her mouth tightened slightly at the thought and she reached down to stroke the mares neck. Tousling the wild mane as Rain mouthed the bit and snorted as they walked around in circles before the starting box. The steward finally waved her in, and with a nod to the judges Harley picked up the mare and they entered the box, turning for a moment to make sure the mare was listening despite the excitement, before Harley pointed her nose out and urged her forward.
It was time.

<3 thanks so much dude! That orange was probably a poor choice of mine when picking the stable colours.. should have gone for another colour that blends better
