I've always wondered if Web Spider was inspired by Bospider (the boss of Sigma Fortress 1) from the original Mega Man X. They do have a similar attack that involves throwing mini robot spiders to attack.

A little, actually. Except Web Spider needs a little beret hat, which I forgot!

I always liked Web Spider, and X4 has been my favorite X game since its release. I felt silly though that I only recently realized that he's wearing a beret in-game and in his concept art. I thought it made him slightly silly looking, but I still like him a lot, and quote his "shuka shuka shuka shuka shuka!" sound more than I should admit to.

That being said, I hate fighting him, especially given that I'm an X player (I respect Zero and like him a lot, but I felt the games were called "Mega Man X" for a reason, lol) and I always had difficulty in boss battles - primarily his - when using them Fourth Armor boots.

...oh. My. GOD. I had NEVER noticed that!! I feel terribly under-learned! I feel like I know nothing! Wow, well spotted! I should do another version with his hat on!
I really enjoyed his battle, especially with X. Zero was fun to play, but like you, I'm loyal to the main man, Mega. I think Spider and Walrus are my favourites from X4, with Dragoon annoying me slightly. But overall, all the mavericks were rather enjoyable. I think the WORST maverick in X history was Splash Warfly............eurgh. (But that game suffered dearly, anyway).

I think he looks better without the beret, not that I have anything against it.

I never noticed the beret before, but I'm tempted to do a version of him with it, I kinda like it now I notice it.

Haha I know! I slapped myself in the face when I first noticed the beret!
And what's worse, is that he's not the only Maverick in that game to wear one: Storm Owl (I noticed his since the beginning, though) and, surprisingly to me, Jet Stingray also wear one. Frost Walrus MIGHT be wearing SOME sort of hat but I still can't decipher it. Slash Beast doesn't wear a hat, but does have an eyepatch over his (canonically) left eye.

My favorites were Frost Walrus and - surprisingly - Split Mushroom, who is a favorite simply because I really like his design (my other top favorite design pick is Earthrock Trilobyte, so I seem to have a thing for the squat dudes lol). In terms of fighting against though, my favorite two to fight Walrus and Stingray. I only like fighting Dragoon because I always bring the Ride Armor to punish him, haha.

I really liked Splash Warfly's design, but his battle was obnoxious; but then again, everything about X7 was pretty obnoxious, honestly.

Now that you mention it, actually there were three bosses I didn't know the origins of for some time. The one I forgot was actually Splash Warfly -- because of his name and incredible skinniness, I assumed he was a Mayfly, and his water theme being a reference to a Mayfly's juvenile life and its sudden reaching of adulthood (he's actually a flying fish). The other one is everyone's major confusion -- Boomer Kuwanger. I was confused for ages, and then all the info about him on the net started saying he was a cockroach; I actually made my Megaman Tempo version of him, Boomboom Kuwanger, on the idea that a cockroach is hard to kill (thereby making his return making a whole lick of sense). Turns out, he's actually a stag beetle.

In other but still related news, I am all up for you doing a new version of Spider...but then again, I'm a little partial to the idea myself.
