Description Rain only comes to Aheya three months out of the entire year, making life for the native population extremely meager. As nomadic pastoralists, they drive their herds for miles and depend on them for every aspect of life. When the rainy season finally arrives, all the Aheyan tribes reunite and celebrate at the source.

Environments are so hard
Gonna try to practice and upload lotsa landscape concepts.
If you're interested in seeing more concept art for ~Spatty and my project, head this way ~

EDIT
jk, flipped the entire background~

Oh boy, I love the layers of different colors communicating distance, clever!

And the pic itself it's quite the eye candy to look at, love the field and hot like vibe it gives!

Nice back story, rain seem to be quite important for the Aheyan people, and yes environments are hard!

Hey thanks! It's awesome that you looked at this with an objective eye to tell what I was doing with the layers Also I'm very pleased to hear that most people find this warm to look at in both senses of the word, nice too look at and also hot-in-temperature looking. Those were definitely my goals!

i love the scene and how you played with colours.

is aheya a place you made up? it sounds so very lovely, and unique. i love the part where they come to celebrate, sounds like a very nice culture.

Thank you Yes, Aheya is the creation of ~Spatty and I, for a story we're working on. I'm really glad you find that little story interesting, and that you find Aheya to seem very unique! It's where the main character comes from, and we really want it to be a unique place, in contrast with the common theme of the peaceful green homeland that most stories start with.

I hate drawing backgrounds too, it's so bigXP but pretty if u pull it off

Haha, actually I love doing backgrounds, I just hate finalizing/cleaning them up... takes so long

Clutch45 [2012-07-18 19:21:17 +0000 UTC]

Looks really great, and YES, these things are HARD to draw... Ugh. I hate bg's... they are my WORST thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rontufox In reply to Clutch45 [2012-07-18 19:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I'm bad at environments cuz I tend to zoom in way too much, so then I usually create something boring =/ Why are you bad at them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clutch45 In reply to rontufox [2012-07-18 19:44:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't seem to have any sense for it. I'm never sure what should go into one, how to do the layout, how to keep it from just being a bowl of copypasta (except I mostly draw on paper, so the repetition get SUPER tedious)... basically, I just don't know what to put in a background.

rontufox In reply to Clutch45 [2012-07-19 18:35:42 +0000 UTC]

My best advice is to look at tons of landscapes, tons, and usually of the speed-painting variety. I didn't even know where to start, I always have like 20 reference images up while I'm trying to come up with a landscape.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clutch45 In reply to rontufox [2012-07-20 07:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that does sound good, I'll definitely have to do that. The whole thing just baffles me, and I don't even really know why. Lack of practice wouldn't begin to cover it either, I've only ever even drawn backgrounds four times in my life that I can think of, and I think they're all on here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rontufox In reply to Clutch45 [2012-07-20 18:36:40 +0000 UTC]

Haha I know what you mean. The thing about landscapes is compared with drawing just plain ol characters, they're really boring to do, so most people don't get much practice on them...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Clutch45 In reply to rontufox [2012-07-20 19:07:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, MAN is that the truth. I've actually been forcing myself to do a landscape of a sort of modern/realistic green hill. It's been very difficult, but it's turning our good so far. [link] Though, speed paint it ain't... I'm not even halfway, and I'm going on a month now...

The colors in this are absolutely beautiful! It has a great sense of depth -- it really feels like those hills are very far away. And I love the story behind it as well.

Getting the atmospheric perspective to look right for those hills in the distance certainly was a challenge, but I'm glad it comes across well! Thank you very much, I'm happy you enjoy!

Aheya looks awesome! It would be awful to live without rain for 6 months DX The other three months must be bliss!

The colors look bright and vivid. They give off a cheerful feeling

This is wonderful! I love the different colors, the landscape, the gigantic rocks, the shading of the hills, and how the colors fade the farther you go into the background!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rontufox In reply to bulgariansumo [2012-07-18 02:01:26 +0000 UTC]

Ah, glad you like so many elements in this! The colors fading is called atmospheric perspective, where things get bluer as they recede into the distance, and it took me forever to figure it out here Thanks!
