Thank you for commenting! I tried to paint the grass very dark to show the uncertainty of the path and deceptiveness of the idol as a milestone. However, I need to practice more to make darkness convincing.

I'm doing this critique for
You used and awesome technique on this! Great job! However, I think the painting needs more contrast, ex: the foreground darker and the horizon lighter. Also, the see-through branches on the tree don't match the style of the rest of the painting. However, the grass, stream and distant forest is amazing! Also, I love the sunset! But it would look cool if there wre snow on the ground.
Overall, this piece is very impacting!
Keep the Good work up!

I already had snow on one of them out of laziness, but here I wanted to try painting a large dark area. You are right about the contrast, though. Thank you for mentioning!

Hello! I'm commenting on behalf of and I think this piece is very interesting. The colors are absolutely gorgeous and I love your use of watercolors to create textures. I've never been able to get my watercolors to obey what I want them to do, so this is super impressive to me! I'm honestly hesitant to critique some of the "flaws" I see in this, such as the somewhat unnatural tilt of the stone figure compared to the shape of its base or the different directions of the grass blades, because I feel like a lot of them aid the piece's overall mysterious feeling. It's a piece that makes you ponder, and I can say that as someone who rarely is able to comprehend art that's just supposed to make you think! Your piece is grounded enough in reality so even people who don't quite get abstract art can understand it and find it beautiful. One thing I do think it could benefit from though is more contrast between the background and the stone figure. I'm looking at the thumbnails of some of the other pieces you've done like this that you lined in your descriptions, and those figures all clearly protrude into a light sky, and some of them even have lighter grounds to contrast themselves against. My suggestion would be to either darken the background or lighten up the stature - I personally recommend lighting up the statue because I think that would be an interesting experiment compared to your other pieces and the background is already fairly dark, but you could do a combination of both. Overall, stunning piece, fantastic work!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment!
The idol is wooden and is tilted in real life and I wanted to preserve this unbalance. You are absolutely right that the statue blends with the background. However, if I did this again, I would have darkened the statue. The background here is lighter than the foreground and is more detailed because more light reaches it to discern something. I would think that the idol should be even darker to be a part of the dark surroundings where the viewer finds himself. Choices, choices...

Hi from ProjectComment! I'm commenting as part of the Everything Must Go contest .
Gosh, this piece is gorgeous ! I love how detailed your entire piece is - the mountains in the background, the tall trees breaking up the sky, the diverse foliage surrounding the idol...all this detail makes me keep wanting to look at your drawing. I'm used to seeing complex foregrounds coupled with simple backgrounds, and find it impressive when an artist can achieve high levels of detail in both without making their drawing look too cluttered or distracting. You've nailed this balance perfectly .
Personally, I find the background of this drawing more interesting to look at compared to the foreground, partly due to the greater visual contrast in the former. This is not to say that there isn't enough contrast in the foreground, however - the variety of strokes and colors you used give the impression of high diversity. However, the range of colors used is greater overall in the background.
Additionally, the foliage doesn't look as well-blended as the rest of the drawing. Compared to the foliage in some of your other drawings, like the ones below, the foliage here look patchier. I think adding more sharp blades of grass might help mediate this, since I see that the below drawings have a lot of sharp grass blades, and they help ease the visual transition between different colors in the foliage.
Lastly, I feel that the top left portion of the idol blends in with the mountains in the background. I know that highlighting the left part of the idol might not work since the light source is coming from the top-left, but perhaps you could extend the highlights on the mountains a bit farther to the left.
Overall, your works are extremely beautiful, and I'm very impressed by your skills. I hope that you will keep up the excellent work!

Ooh wow, this is gorgeous. The colours are so brilliantly chosen and placed, and it's very atmospheric. It appears to carry two different weathers, it could be windy, or it could be dead still, and both of those match this perfectly. Magnificent work!

Love this piece of art work. Moody, powerful, poignant. Congrats. Reminds me of the work of a great Canadian master painter Emily Carr who did a lot of work with indigenous sculpture and symbolism of the Pacific Northwest.

Thank you for commenting and for telling me about Emily Carr, I know almost nothing of the New World art, and she seems very interesting.

Huh! This idol reminds me somewhat of the Scandinavian trolls with that long nose.

It might well be that some troll-like folklore figure was the inspiration for this thing. I am not sure how authentic these things are (to what proportions they reflect tradition vs artist's imagination), as they are quite recent.

Этот в серии становится моим любимцем, сумеречно, таинственно, даже влажность ощущается, и отблески розового и жёлтого потрясающе подчёркивают глушь и непроходимость леса, основательно!
